THE OAKLAND A's hosted a fundraiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation on Wednesday. What did they sell to raise money? Would you believe root beer floats?
Before you go into sugar shock, bear in mind that healthy options were available. And the team raised more than $30,000 for the foundation, increasing its six-year total to $245,000.
That's sweet.
Still, it got the folks at Sports by Brooks wondering what promotions the A's have in the works. Burger King Double Whopper Day to benefit the American Heart Association? Or maybe Marlboro Cigarette Day for the American Cancer Society?
Huh?
Jim Furyk says he avoids reading newspaper coverage at golf tournaments.
"I have a great relationship, in my opinion, with the media," he added. "I feel like I've been treated fairly."
Which leads the Buzz to wonder: How would he know?
By George
George Foreman recently told Jimmy Kimmel that he gave his five sons - all named George - nicknames so he could tell them apart. But he could only remember one of the nicknames.
"The one who was supposed to be the last one," he said, "we called 'Red,' after a stoplight."
Special delivery
A pizza restaurant operator in a Denver suburb is offering free pizza - for the world - if Tampa Bay wins the World Series.
John Keiley told the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times that he's not a Rays fan, but he really can't stand their AL East rivals.
"If the Red Sox and Yankees don't get in the playoffs, that would be heaven," he said.
This sounds like a cheesy publicity stunt. But it may not be a pie-in-the-sky offer.
In June 2007, he offered free pizza if the Rockies swept the Yankees. When they did, Keiley gave away 2,500 pizzas - at a cost of about $12,000.
When the 2007 NFL season kicked off, he said he'd give away pizza if any team went 16-0. He made good - to the tune of 1,500 pizzas - after the Patriots completed a perfect regular season.
So write this name down: Johnny's New York Pizza & Pasta of Lakewood, Colo.
Delivery to Hampton Roads could take more time than usual, so make sure you give the driver an extra-good tip. But it could still be a good deal - no matter how you slice it.
Child's play
Anastasiya Korzh was kicked out of a tennis tournament in New Zealand recently when officials ruled that she was receiving instructions from her father through a receiver hidden in her headband.
Korzh, who was playing in her first tournament, is 8.
The Buzz expects dad to receive plenty of static over this.
