Two fundraisers Saturday will help raise money for Caitlin Pettit, an 18-year-old who broke her neck and was paralyzed June 22 when she dove into a friend’s swimming pool.

Pettit and her mother arrived July 11 at the Shepard Center in Atlanta, a rehabilitation hospital for people with spinal cord injuries, said Anne-Marie Loughran, Pettit’s aunt.

Pettit, who planned to be a volunteer firefighter, has a number of therapies to undergo.

A yard sale at 9 a.m. Saturday at fire station No. 10 in Hampton, 204 Marcella Road, will raise money for a Sun Trust bank fund for Pettit’s medical costs. Peninsula Stars softball players will hold a car wash at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at PC Doctors, 1248 N. King St., to raise money.

Another fundraiser will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bass Pro Shops, 1972 Power Plant Parkway in Hampton.

Loughran said the family is grateful for support that already arrived. The flight to Atlanta was made possible through donations, she said.
