The state’s chief deputy superintendent of schools will take over Virginia’s top education job in October, the governor’s office announced this afternoon.

Patricia I. Wright, who has overseen day-to-day operations of the Virginia Department of Education since 2006, will become state superintendent after the departure of Billy K. Cannaday Jr. He is leaving at the end of September to take a position at the University of Virginia.

Wright served as deputy superintendent and acting superintendent from 2004 to 2006 and began her career teaching math in Sussex County and Chesterfield County schools.
