Hyde County emergency chief quits to take new job

Posted to: News North Carolina

The emergency management coordinator for Hyde County submitted his resignation

to the county on Friday, saying he has accepted a similar position in an unnamed county.

Tony Spencer, who is also the county's fire marshal, said the resignation is effective on July 31.

In a letter to the interim county manager, Carl Classen, Spencer said he has agreed to be communications director and deputy emergency services director in another county.

He declined to identify the county pending its announcement.

"This is an exciting challenge for me to undertake," Spencer wrote, "and one that is full of potential growth both professionally and otherwise, as part of a larger organization."

Classen said in an interview that Spencer's role included overseeing the radio systems, the 911 database and building inspections.

"He's been a real jack-of-all-trades for the county," Classen said.
