Italian submarine coming to Norfolk Naval Station

An Italian submarine is scheduled to arrive at Norfolk Naval Station on Friday for a 13-day visit.

The ITS Salvatore Todaro will arrive at Pier 3 about 9 a.m. following an exercise with the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group, according to a Navy news release. The submarine’s home port is Taranto, Italy.

The submarine’s participation in the exercise is called a first for the Italian Navy. The crew’s voyage marks the first time since World War II that an Italian submarine has crossed the Atlantic Ocean.

During the submarine’s visit, the crew will participate in training exercises with the U.S. Navy, the release says.

After reading the other article on this exercise it reminded me of how we used to refuel many of our so called allies (NATO) ships at sea for free in order to get them out to participate.
Just a tidbit that is never mentioned.
