NORFOLK
If at first you don't succeed, try again.
That's the idea behind "Who's On The BLVD," a new talent contest. "BLVD" stands for Better Lives, Visions and Dreams.
Since April, locals have auditioned songs, dances, raps, comedy and more at the Attucks Theatre and The Gallery at Military Circle, hoping for a slot in a talent contest that will be televised on local cable and perhaps nationally.
The next audition is Saturday at The Gallery at Military Circle. After that, the talent search will go to Maryland, Florida and Atlanta before returning to Norfolk.
Those who try out but don't make the cut won't exactly get the boot.
"We won't just say 'you won't make it,' we'll bring you back to the Attucks (Theatre) and we'll work them," said Ephraim Goodman, director of the Young Adult Performing Arts Outreach Program Inc. which is sponsoring the contest.
The eight-week training course - called BLVD School - will teach about performance techniques, wardrobe and style, presentation and more. The twice-weekly classes start July 14 at Attucks Theatre, 1010 Church St. After completing the course, participants can tryout again.
Goodman, director of the Virginia Young Adult Choir and a music minister at Garden of Prayer Worship Center on Church Street, said nearly 600 folks have auditioned, so far. By the end of the talent search, he's hoping for 15,000.
The final 12 weeks of competition will begin in December. For info and rules, call 237-8275 or 305-9899 or visit http://www.whosontheblvd.net.
The next audition is 3 p.m. Saturday at The Gallery at Military Circle, 880 N. Military Hwy.
