VIRGINIA BEACH

A mail carrier was struck by lightning this afternoon while delivering mail in Virginia Beach, an official said.

Bruce Nedelka, division chief for the city’s emergency medical services, said it wasn’t clear whether the carrier suffered a direct strike, but his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Nedelka said the mail carrier called 911 to report that he thought he had been struck by lightning, but didn't think he was hurt. Paramedics found minor burns on him, Nedelka said.

"If he were hit directly, he is a very lucky guy," he said.

He was transported to Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital for treatment.

Earlier this month, a jogger died after she was struck by lightning at Sandbridge.
