Pasquotank County sheriff’s deputies are still investigating the death of a man found in the passenger seat of a vehicle Thursday night, but his identity has been confirmed.

George Russell Lane, 45, of Elizabeth City, was found dead in the passenger seat of a car stopped by a Pasquotank County deputy. His body was sent to Chapel Hill for autopsy, but investigators have not yet received the results, said Sheriff Randy Cartwright.

Lane’s death was discovered shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday when police were called to the U.S. 17 bypass outside Elizabeth City for a possible drunken driver, Cartwright said.

A deputy stopped the car in the Wal-Mart Supercenter parking lot and saw a man slumped over in the passenger seat, Cartwright said.

The driver told the deputy that he was swerving to try to wake the passenger but had been unsuccessful. Emergency Medical Services determined he was dead.

The driver, Wayne Augsburger, 43, of Hertford, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and released on bond, Cartwright said.

Augsburger could not identify Lane because he told police they had met while working together and he only knew his first name.
