CHESAPEAKE

If not for a crack addiction, David Lee Bass said he would have never preyed on senior citizens throughout Chesapeake last year.

The 40-year-old burglarized a few of their homes. Bass and a female accomplice fast-talked their way into other homes and stole cash and valuables.

“Everything I’ve ever been in trouble for has been because of cocaine,” Bass said Tuesday in Chesapeake Circuit Court.

Judge V. Thomas Forehand Jr. sentenced Bass to 17 years and six months in prison for a probation violation and a list of crimes involving a series of scams against the elderly May 9-25, 2007. Forehand said it was one of the stiffest sentences he has given in a larceny-type case, exceeding sentencing guidelines.

“Sometimes the guidelines don’t address the gravity of the circumstances,” Forehand said.
