PORTSMOUTH

The motorcyclist who was killed in an accident while fleeing from police in Portsmouth Saturday has been identified as Corey Danon Whitley, of the 6000 block of Churchland Boulevard, a police spokeswoman said.

Whitley, 33, was pronounced dead at about 1:15 p.m. Saturday at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. His name had previously been withheld pending notification of family.

A Portsmouth police officer spotted Whitley speeding eastbound on High Street about 11:15 a.m. and tried to pull the bike over, said police spokeswoman Ann Hope. Whitley sped away, and the officer lost sight of him, she said.

Two minutes later, authorities learned he had crashed at Court and London streets, she said. A preliminary investigation indicated he veered off the road at the intersection, struck a tree and was thrown from his bike, she said.

He was flown to the hospital for treatment but died of his injuries two hours later, Hope said.
