Military briefs: Operation tests forces' disaster-relief abilities

About 700 soldiers from Fort Eustis and Fort Story are wrapping up several weeks of training as part of Operation Pacific Strike, the annual Joint Logistics Over the Shore exercise in Camp Pendleton, Calif.

The drill tests the ability of the Army and Navy to put forces ashore in areas without a port, said Lt. Col. Andrew C. Peters, commander of the 24th Transportation Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade. It also offers practice for disaster relief operations.

In about four days, soldiers and sailors unloaded more than 1,500 pieces of cargo from an offshore vessel via a temporary causeway and shipped trucks and containers about 250 miles inland, he said.

Oceana child center gets honor for design

The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Mid-Atlantic a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design silver rating for the new child development center at Oceana Naval Air Station.

The center, which opened in March 2007, supports 280 children.

The award honors construction that includes features such as recycled materials, sediment and erosion control and stormwater management.

Norfolk Naval Station Lt. Gen. to retire after 36 years

Lt. Gen. Richard F. Natonski is set to assume command of U.S. Marine Corps Forces Command from Lt. Gen. Joseph F. Weber during a ceremony today at Norfolk Naval Station.

Weber will retire after 36 years of service. Natonski most recently served as deputy commandant for Plans, Policies and Operations at Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington.

Kearsarge gets new leadership

Capt. Walter Towns is set to relieve Capt. James Gregorski as commanding officer of the amphibious assault ship Kearsarge at a ceremony Monday.

Under Gregorski's leadership, Kearsarge achieved the highest certification grades by a large deck amphibious assault ship since the Fleet Response Plan was implemented. In February, the ship had two newly painted gold anchors on the bow, in recognition of the Retention Excellence Award received on deployment. Nearly 200 sailors re-enlisted.

Towns was the chief of staff of Expeditionary Strike Group Three.
