Common Ground

Virginian-Pilot staff photographer Genevieve Ross will explore the theme of “FIRSTS” – a weekly visual exploration of first time life events including rites of passage and other experiences which are common in our culture and in our community.  Please contact Genevieve with any thoughts, comments and/or ideas by posting a comment or e-mailing to  genevieve.ross@pilotonline.com.

My First birthday

When Jake Jurgensen turned 1 on July 8th, the party had to come to him. He’s been in the hospital since birth with a condition that obstructs his airways referred to as a lymphatic malformation. Within two hours of being born, he was rushed from a hospital in Hampton to the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters in Norfolk. He has lived at CHKD ever since. Eventually, Jake will be able to leave, when his tracheotomy tube can be removed and his breathing is normal. “It’s always hard. It’s been a year and he’s still in the hospital,” said his mother, Angie Wolford of Yorktown, pictured at left. “I just want him home.”
