Nags Head won't pursue sand dredging project

The Nags Head Board of Commissioners decided Friday not to pursue a potential project with the Army Corps of Engineers that would have put sand dredged from Oregon Inlet on town beaches.

"The decision was already made by the Corps of Engineers that the sand would go to Pea Island," Commissioner Doug Remaley said.

The board was going to consider sending a letter to the corps expressing interest in the possible project, which probably would have involved a cost-sharing arrangement.

Over the years, the town has tried numerous times to find funding to widen the eroding beaches.

Some homeowners have protected their houses with sandbags, but on May 1, the state began requiring that exposed bags be removed.
