North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement agents cited 20 clerks in the northeast part of the state recently for selling tobacco to minors.

The citations follow an enforcement sweep of stores in Bertie, Chowan, Gates, Martin, Nash and Washington counties over the past three months.

Agents did a random check of 72 stores in the area, according to a press release from the state Department of Crime Control and Public Safety.

In North Carolina you must be 18 to buy tobacco products.
