N.C. toddlers who were found in car are buried

MANTEO, N.C.

Kassandra Rain Daniels lived 19 short months. Her sister Amariyah Lynn Daniels lived one year longer. They were buried Wednesday after a service at Free Grace Church of Christ in Manteo.

Representatives for the family said they did not want media coverage of the funeral.

The girls were discovered Friday in a neighbor's car in which the temperature had reached 135 degrees. Police had been called at about 2:50 p.m. to the Manns Harbor home the mother, Amy Lynn Cooper, was renting.

In an earlier interview, Lt. Bill Godley of the Dare County Sheriff's Office said Cooper had told police the girls had been missing about 20 minutes and that her children were last together with her at 12:45 p.m.

Godley said Wednesday that Cooper said she had taken a nap with the children and that when she awoke, they were not there.

The girls were apparently playing outside with their 4-year-old brother, Kendrick, Godley said, but it is unclear how they got into the vehicle.

He said the investigation by the Sheriff's Office will include follow-up interviews with Cooper. In about a week, Godley said, the case will be ready for the district attorney, who will decide if it warrants criminal charges. State and county social services officials are also investigating, he said.

The two older children were in the custody of the Dare County Department of Social Services and the court had placed them with their mother, Director Jay Burrus said Monday. Burrus said Social Services has established a "protection plan" for Kendrick with relatives in Dare County.
