WHETHER FRED HANDS IS registering new residents or relaxing in his apartment, he feels right at home at The Alexander at Ghent. Not only is the 52-year-old the property manager of the apartment homes , he’s also a resident.

Hands relocated from Ohio to manage the property, which was built by CEI Construction in 2006. The Alexander at Ghent, formerly known as The Bristol at Ghent, was previously owned and managed by Bristol Development Group LLC and is now managed by Associated Estates Realty Corp.

The complex is built around three center courtyards and spans more than 3 acres of three city blocks, from 15th to 17th streets, between Granby Street and Monticello Avenue. It’s located on the site of a former Mary Jane Bakery and Ghent Market and Antique Centre.

Each of the complex’s 268 units – including 136 one-bedroom, 120 two-bedroom and 12 three- bedroom units – have 9-or 10-foot ceilings, a gourmet kitchen with island and builtin microwave, pantry, ceiling fans and washer/dryer.

Select apartments have computer workstations, walkin closets, garden and soaking tubs, and a patio or balcony. All residents have use of the controlled-access, four-level attached parking garage with 420 spaces.

Brad Bender, 47, said The Alexander at Ghent is a great place to live for those who want to be downtown.

“My apartment overlooks Monticello, but it’s quiet,” said Bender, who moved from California in early 2007.

Bender found his two-bedroom, two-bath apartment through an Internet search.

“It’s conveniently located, and I have all of the modern conveniences in my apartment,” he added.

Ashley Montgomery, 21, lived in The Alexander at Ghent when it first opened, moved to another location in Norfolk for a year and then moved back in March.

“I just needed to get back here,” the Old Dominion University student said. “I missed the space, the price, the convenience and the atmosphere.”
