New Point Comfort Lighthouse

Posted to: Lighthouses Virginia

Commissioned in 1804 by Thomas Jefferson, the sandstone lighthouse stands 63 feet tall and is octagonal. During the Civil War, Confederate soldiers disabled its light to make it more diffiicult and dangerous for Union troops to navigate the Bay. It was partially automated in 1919, removing the need for a keeper. It was acquired by the Nature Conservancy in 1979 and was turned over to Mathews County as a natural area in 1982. The lighthouse is not open to the public.
