A man is in critical condition in a hospital this morning after firefighters found him unconscious in his apartment because of smoke from a kitchen fire.

Firefighters went to the home in the 500 block of Bellwood Road after someone in a neighboring apartment called 911, said Dana Perry, fire department spokeswoman.

The man, who wasn’t breathing, was found in a bedroom, revived and taken to a hospital, Perry said.

Firefighters found the smoke alarm on the bedroom floor and replaced the battery, Perry said.

Fire officials were urging apartment residents who need help replacing smoke alarm batteries to call their management office. Homeowners can call the fire department at (757) 926-8009.
