Newport News police charge 1 man with copper theft, seek 2 others

A man sought on charges of theft of copper wire last month from a power substation turned himself in to police in Hampton, authorities said.

Police in Newport News had warrants on file charging Blanten Gene Carr with conspiracy to commit larceny, grand larceny, damage to private property, damage to a public utility, obtaining money by false pretenses and possession of stolen property, according to a police news release.

Police said the copper theft occurred in the 500 block of Industrial Park Drive, the release says.

Investigators also have warrants on file charging two other men with theft of copper wire from the substation and are looking for them, the release says.

The warrants charge Scotty Steven Kuzma, 26, of Hayes, with conspiracy to commit larceny, grand larceny, stealing property with the intent to sell, entering property to damage, probation violation and two counts of destruction of property, the release says.

Other warrants charge Roger Kenton Lilly III, 28, with possession of stolen property and accessory to grand larceny. Lilly lives in the 100 block of Robinson Drive in Newport News.

Newport News police wrote that Hampton police also had warrants on file charging Carr with grand larceny, vandalism, obtaining money by false pretenses and trespassing on public utility property.
