NORFOLK

Police shot and killed a fox this morning on Andrew Lane after someone called to report a vicious animal.

The animal, believed to be rabid, was the second fox shot and killed by police since June 21, said Sgt. James Robertson, police spokesman.

Someone called police about 6:45 a.m. today to report the fox in the 8200 block of Andrew Lane, Robertson said. When officers arrived, the fox charged at them and was killed with a shotgun.

No one was hurt, Robertson said.

An officer tried unsuccessfully to use a taser on a fox that charged at her on June 21 in the 400 block of State St., Robertson said.

The fox scratched the officer and ran away, Roberston said.

Officers searched for the animal and later found a fox in a back yard in the 400 block of W. Ocean View Ave. That animal was killed and later tested positive for rabies, Robertson said.

The officer is receiving treatment.

who writes these headlines

I thought they shot the same poor fox a second time. I mean how many times can you kill the same animal? Not for nothing but isn't shooting a dead fox like beating a dead horse?

fox attack

I'm one of the ladies who got hurt, the fox charge at my arm and bit me the rabies shot are not a joke they hurt. i did even receive my tag for rabies my cat got his. ha!ha!

Mace them or shoot them

More and more wild animals are adapting to living in the human world. Cayotes are next. Bigger than foxes too. The idea of macing them, that way a rabid animal can run around and later bit someone elses child or maybe yours. Makes perfect sense. As far as local law enforcment. Well they are hiring like mad. Just trot on down and apply. Learn what its really like. Then you can spout off.

Where to turn????

My mother has a problem in her yard in Chesapeake. A fox has made a den under her garden shed. She is terrified of going out in the yard. She's called the Animal Control, the Game Warden, the police and the Health Department. No one will come out to assist unless she has been scratched or bitten by the fox. They've advised her to call a trapper. My mother is almost 80. What happens when the fox is trapped? What does she do with it then?

The fox is there because the neighbor next to her feeds geese, ducks, birds, and squirrels by the hundreds up to three times per day. There is nothing in place...no law on the books.... to stop the neighbor from feeding. The fox is lying in wait for his next meal. I only hope it's not my mother!

Seen in Berkley

I live in the Berkley community and I have seen several grey foxes over the past couple of years. I saw a young one last night crossing State Street. The city really needs to set some traps in the open field near the corner of State and Liberty Street before someone gets bitten.

Mace?

They weren't trying to keep the fox from fighting, they wanted to catch it! Mace a fox and see how far it runs.

A tazer though??? I would pay good money to see a fox being tazed... but I'd feel bad for the fox afterward!

Gey Foxes

Our neighborhood has a pack of three grey foxes running wild throughout the neighborhood. Twice, they have charged people who were innocently standing near them. They are hungry. Everyone should be cautious in that they tend to look like small dogs and children might mistaken them for dogs and approach them.

Nah

Shoot first, and find a better way to do it later... Isn't that what they teach area law enforcement??? :-)

He should have Maced him...

That usually works on a Fox.
