Norfolk Southern plans upstate New York terminal

Norfolk Southern Corp. plans to build a $40 million intermodal and automotive terminal in upstate New York's Saratoga County, the Norfolk-based railroad said Tuesday.

The investment is part of the $140 million Norfolk Southern said in May it would spend to create an improved rail route called the "Patriot Corridor" between Albany, N.Y., and the Boston area in a joint venture with Pan Am Railways. "Intermodal" refers to the movement of cargo containers and truck trailers by trains.

Construction of the new rail yard is expected to begin early next year, if the U.S. Surface Transportation Board approves the Patriot Corridor deal. The board is expected to announce its decision in October, according to Norfolk Southern.
