State police increasing presence after rash of fatal wrecks

Posted to: News Transportation and Traffic

Twelve people have died in traffic deaths this month in Hampton Roads, prompting state police to bring a special safety initiative here this weekend.

Operation Air, Land and Speed will target area interstates today and tomorrow with troopers stepping up their presence and looking for unsafe, aggressive driving, according to a state police news release.

The goal of the safety initiative is to remind drivers to slow down and buckle their seatbelts, the release says.

The safety initiative has been used around the state with 69,671 tickets written since 2006, the release says.

Dr. Tabor

It can't happen anymore.
People are so used to weaving that, when I am going 65 in the left lane and see a car approaching going 75 or 85, if I signal and cut over, I will nearly get clipped by them moving to get around me.
People are so used to passing in the right lane (me included, sometimes) that they don't watch for anyone to move over anymore. And . . . at those rates of speed, it is a split second decision as to move or not to move. Cheers, MGM

Good Thing?

Regarding those 75mph cars weaving through traffic.

Why were they having to weave? Should they have not gone by unimpeded in the left lane as slower traffic allowed them to pass as required by state law?

Who really creates the danger to themselves and others, those who drive 75mph on a road designed for 90mph but which has a Carter Era limit placed for reasons other than safety, or those who self righteously try to force others to drive at their own preferred speed by refusing to yield to passing traffic as required by law?

One need not advocate breaking the speed limit to recognize the danger created by aggressive driving, which includes failure to yield to passing traffic just as it does tailgating and passing on the right.

can't believe some of this...

you all who complain about people who PUT THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE EVERY SINGLE DAY should be ashamed of yourselves!! if you abide by the law, you don't have a thing to worry about. as for cops being bad drivers themselves, don't lump ALL COPS together - how is that fair? my father is a cop and i am so sick of hearing comments such as the complaints following this article. where would you all be without police officers -same goes for nurses, firemen, teachers - all those people that get abused by the public. come on! the reason for the stepped up enforcement this weekend is to SAVE lives. and for the guy who said something to the effect of come on and get me - i hope you get a big fact ticket this weekend!

hasn't everyone seen

how badly cops drive. I'm not talking about their personal vehicles either, that's another story all together. When they're in their cruisers they drive like they're the only ones on the road. And, I won't even go into turn signals, full stops @ stop signs, illegal lane changes etc. etc. etc. If they didn't hide behind their badges they would be the ones w/the worst driving records. They set a terrible example.

WOW!

Time to unleash the full force of the elite enforcement machine that are better referred to as AAA with guns.

Good thing

I personally think this is a good thing. I'm not talking about the drivers that are safe, but I've seen a number of stupid drivers. I was driving down the interstate the other day when four cars came past me going at least 75MPH and weaving in and out of traffic like it was some sort of race. This wasn't even at 2AM this was in the middle of the day! I can't even begin to mention how many times I've been cut off on the freeway for someone to slam on their breaks and nearly rear end me. Nobody even seems to bother with signals either or they use them when they've already shoved half their car in front of you!

It's only for revenue. .

This has nothing to do with safety and is only a money maker. Speed is not the problem, it's idiots tailgating, not using signals, and driving aggressively that causes these crashes, yet I'd bet 98% of all tickets are only for speeding. Additionally, cell phone use in cars is not illegal in this backwater redneck state with they should be.

Hey cops, I'm running a Valentine 1 in my BMW M3, good luck!!:)

Welcome to the police

Welcome to the police state....

Bayview Blvd. in Norfolk

Needs special attention. The speed limit is 30 and most people do at least 35. It's very unsafe, and somebody is going to get hurt (again) if someone doesn't do something. I've notified Norfolk Police so many times, but they can't seem to do anything permanent. Wish State Police could do something in the city.

Air, land and speed?

What kind of moronic title is this? I thought the reason for a title is to briefly describe your program.

This sounds more like a show on the Speed channel...

welcome to hampton roads, troopers...

Catch me if you can!

And have a great weekend!
