Letters to Editor - bLetters

We welcome your opinion on public issues, in either of two ways. You can submit a letter to the editor for possible publication in the printed edition. The Virginian-Pilot welcomes letters to the editor on all topics, although concise letters (150 words or less) on public issues will receive priority. Letters may be edited for length, style and clarity and writers are limited to one published letter every month. Please add your name, city, street address and daytime telephone number for confirmation.

The other way is to comment on the published letters in this blog. In this online forum, you can comment as much as you want by using the comment box at the end of each entry.

Protecting religion

Re: 'On July 4th, we also celebrate religious freedom,' Daily Break, June 28:Betsy Wright Rhodes shed some much-needed light on separation of church and state. Madison, Washington, Jefferson and Franklin understood the importance and real meaning of this principle as the only way to guarantee freedom of religion. It's a shame so many of our current leaders, both political and religious, can't figure this out or have foolishly chosen to forget.

A CHALLENGE

I often hear people say the America was founded on Judeo-Christian principles and that, therefore, Judeo-Christianity should be granted preferential treatment by the government, e.g., posting of the Ten Commandments in government buildings.

I disagree with that sentiment. America was founded on principles that are common among many, if not all, of the world's religions.

My challenge is for anyone to name one principle of behavior that is unique to Christianity. Belief in Jesus as the Son of God, and Lord and Savior doesn't count. That is an article of belief not a principle of behavior.
