In Cynthia's Diary is a post-hard-core/metal-core, four-member band out of Chesapeake.
Lead vocalist and guitarist Chris Coyken-dall and friend Chris Eley formed the band after graduating from different high schools in 2004. After Eley moved to Ohio, Coykendall and the band went through several lineup changes, but the current lineup has been together since 2006: Coykendall with Joey Watkinson on bass and vocals, Brandon Bailey on drums and G. Allen Payne on guitar.
Who's Cynthia?
"That's a question we get a lot," Coykendall said. "The honest answer is Cynthia is an arbitrary name we picked because we thought it sounded beautiful."
And as for her diary, it represents the band's music, which is to be an outlet for the fans.
"Our music is kind of an upbeat progressive style, which has really heavy undertones. But at the same time we don't take it too heavy. We throw in some melodic technical guitar work to even everything out."
The guys released "Feracity" - a full-length album - in November, and will take to the road for a mini-tour in September.
You'll be able to see them Aug. 2 at the Peppermint Beach Club in Virginia Beach when they compete with other bands for a $500 cash prize. This is how Coykendall answered our questions.
What's the band's worst performance memory?
It would have to be a show we played at Winston's last December. We completely packed the place with people, but the venue didn't seem to be prepared for such a large crowd, and people had to push and shove just to move.
If you were going to go out and see another local band, who would it be?
Me personally - Art of Destruction from Chesapeake.
What's one thing people should know about the band?
We're a bunch of hard-working guys that love music and love to throw a great live show.
If the band could write its own headline, what would it be?
In Cynthia's Diary - the melodic side of metal.
