Saturday's Town Point Park fireworks canceled; will not be rescheduled

Posted to: News Norfolk

The Independence Day fireworks at Norfolk’s Town Point Park have been postponed for a second time. The show was called off July 4, and rescheduled for tonight at 9:30 p.m.

Now, they have been called off again, said Karen Scherberger, executive director of FestEvents. The decision was made at about 7:55 p.m. Saturday.

Scherberger said organizers decided to play it safe, given predictions of lightning.

Organizers said the event will not be rescheduled this year.

Really!!

How dare Norfolk let it rain!!! Shame on them !!! Next year, they better not let it rain!

ACTUALLY WE CARE............

I am TOTALLY sick about this fireworks show. To have the opportunity to do the show and let it slip by is unforgivable. I have 3 EXTREMELY sad children at home today because they had been looking forward to fireworks for weeks. It is a BIG deal in our family and Norfolk DROPPED THE BALL. We will definitely consider going elsewhere for fireworks next year and I hope MANY other people to the same to send a message to Norfolk and Fest Events.

WHO CARES

Did anyone notice? Of course not. Just shows you how unnecessary these "events" are.

Norfolk shows, yet again, bad judgement

I sat on the grass with my family Friday noght for three hours waiting for the fireworks. The weather was beautiful with a slight breeze. One could see the fireworks at OV and Mount Trashmore off in the distance. Someone PLEASE tell me, knowing there were 1000's of people in downtown Norfolk and Portsmouth why the City of Norfolk and Fest Events couldn't have started early or for that matter, on-time? It didnt start raining until after 10:25 PM. The way I see it, all the Norfolk city offcials wanted anyway was revenue. They knew they were going to cancel them, they didn't care. Everyone else went off without a hitch, Norfolk gets caught holding the bag. I hope the company that was supposed to perform the show charged you DOUBLE!

We were there Friday night

The announcement at the band pavilion at 9:00 was that the barge carrying the fireworks had been held up by a bridge! Now granted, traffic here is abysmal but you'd think the organizers would know better than to wait until the last minute to get the barge in place?!

The barge didn't arrive until almost 9:30 according to the next announcement, then another delay until the announcement at 9:40 that the event would be postponed.

Jeers to the fireworks organizers for not having their barges lined up in a row. Had it been in place, the show could have gone ahead a bit earlier to avoid the bad weather.

Cheers to the Fleet Forces band for a great performance and to the Norfolk P.D. for weathering the storm to direct traffic and pedestrians.

Not looking good for tonight, either

I was thinking about going tonight, but having just checked the Nexrad, I believe I will save myself the trouble and sit this one out....

Man it rained!

Man did it POUR! I saw all these people go from walking down the street to running. I got pictures, they're going on flickr.

The worst part is......

They kept telling us to hang out because the fireworks were definitley going to happen, then they canceled. Bad planning on Norfolks part.....AGAIN!

Confused?

If the article is correct and Festevents made the decision to cancel the show shortly after 9:00, why did they announce at 9:30 there would be a short weather delay, thus encouraging everyone to stick around?

Fireworks Cancellation

If the fireworks canceled at 9, why did boaters, those in most peril, not know until 9:45? There were constant requests on Ch 16 as to the start time of the fireworks until the broadcast at 9:45.

With Radar predicting the exact minute weather reaches your front door, it was dangerous to all of those boaters (who monitored Ch 16 for safety and NOT the drawn out weather cue) to not have had the info available to depart before the mayhem broke out.

I understand that all boaters are responsible for monitoring the weather. When there is only a chance of t-storms and the horizon is clouded by smoke and haze the decision is hard to make. Timely communication would have prevented the mass chaos that broke out with the arrival of the t-storm with heavy winds, rain and zero visibility as countless boats fled.

It is an absolute miracle that souls were not lost.

FREE PARKING?

I wonder are they going to make everyone pay another 5 dollars for parking?

Fireworks

With all the police and public safety boats in the harbor last night at the fireworks they could have at least made an announcement on the their public address system to all of the people anchored in the harbor waiting that the fireworks were cancelled. By not doing so myself as well as many others were caught out in the harbor in a terrible storm that could have been easily avoided. It gives the appearance that the police and fire services are just out there to catch people and not to ensure public safety.

Interesting

Funny how Festevents moved the Ocean View fireworks up in anticipation of bad weather, but not the Town Point Park show where there was a much larger crowd.

FIREWORKS

Why do we have such instruments like doppler radar ? We have such technology that these so called Professional fireworks company could not use ? They could have launched these fireworks before the storm arrived !! I was watching the radar on my cell phone along with other's and we were all wondering why they have not already sent these rockets off !! I guess Norfolk seen a opportunity to make more money so instead sent everyone one home at 9:45 instead of 9 when they $upposely cancelled the show !! WHAT A WASTE AND INCOMPETENT OFFICIALS.
