Leave it to a former Maryland boy to help come up with the idea for a "Blue Crab Festival," which the South Norfolk Ruritan Club will hold from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at the Khedive Shrine Center, 645 Woodlake Drive.
For $25 in advance or $30 at the door, participants will be able to dine on all the steamed crabs and North Carolina-style barbecue, with all the trimmings and beverages they care to consume. And while cracking those yummy crustaceans and heaping slaw on that tangy 'cue, diners will be serenaded by popular local group The River Boyz.
"Dave (McManus, South Norfolk Ruritan president) and I came up with the idea," said event co-organizer Mike Winterling. "I'm originally from Baltimore, and Dave and I are crab eaters from way back. And we noticed there's not a whole lot of crab festivals in this area."
So, with sponsorships secured from local shipyards - including BAE Systems Colonna's Shipyard Inc., Tecnico Corp. and Marine Hydraulics International - the crab consume-a-thon was born.
Tickets are available at all Bank of Hampton Roads branches or from any South Norfolk Ruritan. Winterling said proceeds from this event will benefit the club's current major civic project: building a commons addition to a South Norfolk-based senior center. Call 362-7975 or 477-0554.
