State offers incentives to promote walking, biking

Posted to: News

Portsmouth and Virginia Beach are among 13 Virginia school divisions, local governments and nonprofit groups sharing more than $1 million to encourage walking and biking to school under a Safe Routes to School program announced Thursday by Gov. Timothy M. Kaine.

Portsmouth will receive $24,935 and Virginia Beach will receive $25,000 for promotion, education and law enforcement activities, such as safety programs and training crossing guards, the governor’s office said. Local governments also can apply for money to improve road crossings, signs and other infrastructure around schools.

The program is intended to provide health and environmental benefits, and targets kindergarteners through eighth-graders.

Health

Remember, this post is just another means for someone to show their intelligence or lack thereof.

Waste

Wasteful is out-of-shape, angry, overweight people driving gas guzzlers. They cost society $ in terms increased health problems, they cost society $ in overdependence on fuel, and they help ruin the environment. How can anyone be against any initiative to better heath, save resources and helps the environment? Give me a break--I'm amazed that anyone could be again this.

More waste

Yet another reason Richmond doesn't need another red cent.
