JAMES CITY COUNTY

State police have identified two teens who died early this morning when the car they were in ran off the road, flew into the air and went into some woods off Centerville Road near Jolly Pond Road.

The driver of the car has been identified as Thomas Bernard Karafa, 18, of the 3000 block of Stony Creek Drive West in Williamsburg, said Sgt. Michelle Cotten, state police spokeswoman.

The passenger was Robert Paul McCormack, 16, of the 100 block of Old Field Road in Williamsburg, she said.

Troopers believe the car crashed about 2:30 a.m., but wasn’t discovered until 5:29 a.m. because the road isn’t heavily traveled at night, Cotten said.

Karafa was behind the wheel of the 2001 Volvo and apparently lost control, Cotten said. The car ran off the right side of the road, hit an embankment and flew into the air, Cotten said.

The two were not wearing seatbelts, Cotten said.
