VIRGINIA BEACH

Police have charged three people in a plot to have two Virginia Beach police detectives and another person killed.

According to police, Ronald Mayfield Jr., an inmate at the Virginia Beach Correctional Center, is charged with trying to hire another man to carry out the killings and enlist his girlfriend in the plan.

Police believe the detectives and the other person were targeted in retaliation for Mayfield's earlier arrest on weapons and drug charges. The other person targeted was a witness, police said.

On April 28, police arrested two people after they met with an undercover detective to discuss the plan.

Mayfield, 27, of Norfolk, is charged with three counts each of solicitation for murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Alexander D. Morris, 31, of Virginia Beach, is charged with two counts each of solicitation for murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Vernita Johnson, 25, of Virginia Beach, faces the same charges.

An informant told police about the plot.

According to Chief Prosecutor Harvey Bryant, the commonwealth's attorney's office has been working on this case for months. The evidence was presented at a preliminary hearing in General District Court in May and June. The charges were certified by the grand jury on Monday.
