Staff report

The Norfolk Tides were held hitless for 5 1/3 innings Saturday, then racked up nine hits from that point on to stun the Red Wings 7-6 in Rochester.

Garrett Jones got the Wings on the board with a two-run homer in the first against Tides starter Andy Mitchell (9-5), who earned the win. The Wings tacked on two more runs in the second.

The Tides broke through in the sixth. Eider Torres had the Tides' first hit of the game with a single; Oscar Salazar followed with a home run, cutting the Wings' lead in half. Norfolk tacked on four more hits and three more runs in the inning for a 5-4 lead.

The Wings tied the score at 5 in the sixth, but Mike Costanzo hit a two-run homer off Wings reliever Ricky Barrett (3-4) in the seventh.

Note: The Baltimore Orioles optioned infielder Freddie Bynum to the Tides. The move became necessary after they acquired infielder Juan Castro from Colorado for infielder Mike McCoy, who batted .276 in 53 games for the Tides.
