CHESAPEAKE
To Dennis Toler, the memorial will provide a place for people with nowhere else to go to honor their loved ones.
Toler is retired from the military and works at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens cemetery.
Recently, the cemetery turned a corner of one of its chapels into a "memorial for fallen heroes."
Toler enlisted a group including active duty military, veterans, families plus local police and firefighters to dedicate the memorial Monday morning.
The area includes a piece of stained glass depicting a soaring eagle and a bronze plaque.
"This is for people who have no place to go to honor their loved ones, a place to for a moment of quiet or to lay a flower," Toler said. "It's important for the community to know that this place is here for them."
The chapel will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week.
