Roaring lions, majestic eagles and slithering snakes await at the Virginia Zoo. But sometimes it’s hard to tell who is watching whom. They’ll have their eyes on you, too.

About 350 animals call the 53-acre zoo home. The Africa exhibit is the zoo’s showcase, and it features elephants, giraffes, white rhinos, zebras, ostriches, red river hogs, meerkats and gazelle. There’s even a male lion named Mramba that shows off by parading around with a huge tire around his neck. The elephants play around with a couple of big barrels and that loud crunching sound may be them munching on tasty stocks of bamboo.

You won’t want to miss the Siberian tigers. Sisters Shere Kahn and Shaka Khan weigh approximately 300 pounds each. Over at the Waterfowl Pond, you’ll find resident swans and turtles. Many of the Canada geese and ducks just drop in from the nearby Lafayette River. The Nocturnal Habitats building is where snakes, reptiles and monkeys hang out. You’ll also find a sloth, an ocelot and prickly porcupines. To be expected, the Barnyard exhibit features chickens, goats, cows and a pig named Francis. Other animals include baboons, antelope, llamas, emu and the bison, who have an area to roam. A must-see is the prairie dog town, home to about a dozen of the cute little guys. Visitors may climb under the exhibit and view them up close through a pop-up dome.

Small but clean, and the animals are happy and well-kept. The giraffe & elephant exhibits are really cool. A pleasurable place for a stroll in the city.

I love going to the Norfolk zoo, it may be a small Zoo but its a pleasant and clean place to be. Love all the cute critters there except the snakes. Real nice place to carry the family.

Our zoo has the best giraffe exhibit I've seen anywhere! You stand nose-to-nose with them! I like to walk the circuit to keep in shape. The exhibit ramps are the best "hills" in Norfolk!

Well kept grounds and spacious exhibits. While the size is not on par with the mega-zoos, the focus on quality over quantity is apparent. The kids get to see Africa's large mammals (lions, giraffes, elephants, rhinos). Give them a chance to have fun, appreciate nature, and learn something in the process.

This place is rather lackluster. Go to the DC zoo, or better SanDiago. BTW who is paying for the expansion?

It is much improved! Spacious w/natural habitat exhibits and lush landscaping. It is clean, inviting, and a relaxing, pretty place to stroll. I would like to see better food venders though.

The set up was ok, the zoo was very spacious. There was not very many animals and who ever heard of a zoo with no bears. I would not pay that price again, but would take kids back if it was a half-price day.

Sparse. Few animals and not well kept. Should be free.

Really not all that exciting...unless you are Military and get a discount. I've taken my boys twice and could really care less about going back. I'd rather us watch something on Discovery or Animal Planet at home.
