WVEC-13's Kathryn Barrett to retire after 25 years on the air

Posted to: Health and Medicine News

WVEC-13 Medical Editor Kathryn Barrett will retire after 25 years in journalism to focus on her family. Barrett joined WVEC in 1982 and began her medical reporting for the ABC affiliate in 1990.

“This was a difficult decision, but in the end, I wanted to spend the remaining time at home as my son enters his senior year in high school,” Barrett said in a statement. “In addition, I will be able to dedicate more time as a long-distance caregiver for an elderly relative with Alzheimer’s Disease.”

Her last day will be July 9.

Ms. Kathryn

When I was a videographer at Channel 13 in the '80s. I was fortunate to work with Ms. Barrett. She had a flare for personalizing her stories.
She always brightened up the news room with her own bubbly personality and was a good friend.
"Happy Trails to a good Friend!"

Too Bad For Us She's Retiring

Kathryn Barrett's daily medical reports have consistently been interesting, informative and very useful to our everyday lives. They have been a welcome contrast to the normal crime, crime, and more crime reporting. She has been the highlight of my news viewing for several years and will be greatly missed. Channel 13 will be sorry they allowed her to get away. I wish her well and hope to see her again in the future as what she brings to us is too valuable to allow to come to an end.

She is wonderful and will be missed

I'll miss her medical reports but I wish her well. She is a very bright spot on local TV which is one of the reasons we watch WVEC TV13 everyday!

Kathryn Barrett

This is one of the very precious few remaining television journalists in this area with credibility. Her professional and no-nonsense reporting will be missed.
