SALEM

Ryan Zimmerman went 2 for 5 with two doubles Monday night in a rehabilitation assignment for the Single-A Potomac Nationals during their 8-6 loss to the Salem Avalanche.

It was the first game for the Washington Nationals' starting third baseman, since May 25. Zimmerman, a former Kellam High and U.Va. standout, has been on the disabled list with a small labral tear in his left (non-throwing) shoulder.

Zimmerman started at designated hitter Monday. He'll do so again tonight before taking Wednesday off and joining Triple-A Columbus on Thursday.

He's expected to remain with the Clippers until the Nationals decide he's ready to return to the majors.

The Nationals are 14-31 since Zimmerman's last game.

"We don't have a date when he's going to come back," manager Manny Acta said Sunday. "Whenever he feels he's ready to come over here and help us, then he'll come over here."
