I am actually afraid

to google or look up the sites referenced, I assume (yeah I know what happens when you assume) that they will most likely turn out NSFW. Heck you can't google any disney character anymore without pr0n references.

But seriously, is this furry crazy any crazier than any other cosplay fad? What about the CSI that had the powerful executive old dude that liked to dress as a baby, get his diapers changed and had a secret nursery set up just for him. There is no end to what a human will do to stand out...

Really?

Know of a good Psych 3,400 people should use? How about the other 2,500 on the other coast at the Californian convention? Even better, how about Stan Sakai, Scott Shaw, Rob Paulsen, Carolyn Kelly (The late Walt Kelly's daughter) or Floyd Norman, past guests of Honor to Anthrocon who state their enjoyment during our convention? (Usually in their personal blogs for all to see.)

How about our convention chairman, a man with a doctorate in Chemistry?
Or maybe the fur who runs his own small internet company?
Or the ones that selflessly volunteer their time Mascotting in self-made suits during the weekend to a local children's hospital, or puppeteering for them? Do they require counseling?

Thank you for your concern, but I think we're just fine. :)

talyn, others...

OK, I opened my mind, I went to the sites referenced. I googled. I googled images. I learned new words and terms. Um, I'll just say it was an interesting learning experience, and I hope my kids don't see the things that I saw, especially on the image search.

I also googled some of you. Talyn, seriously, you should talk to someone. I don't feel that I'm annoyed by you. But that you assume everyone is furthers my concern for you.

When I first saw the photos of local furries I chuckled. But this isn't funny. Knowing what I know now furthers my belief that you would benefit from some type of counseling. There's a difference between a hobby and an escapist lifestyle.

God bless you!

I am not tainted by having seen any pertinent CSI episodes, so all I can say is pursue your hobby with wisdom (no sexual involvement of minors or in public places); even better, Mr. Lyon, read Psalm 34:10 (the whole psalm is good). Cheers, MGM

IS THIS A JOKE?

This almost seems like an SNL skit.

hmmm...

Interesting. When does hunting season start?

It is indeed fun. :3 (1/2)

I do indeed do it for the fun. But it's also a group of friends I did not have previously. That's the main attraction, social networking using an anonymous animal persona. It's healthy to daydream a bit and wonder 'What if', you know? This is how many great inventions and other advances of life come from: imagination.

CSI is a television show, created to retain interest and ratings. It succeeded in doing so with episode 4x09, "Fur and Loathing". Honestly, it would've been a boring episode if they did not show the things they showed. Doesn't mean it was the majority of what the fandom does all day.

It's fun, and I am certainly happy to be a part of it.

Furries

Furries are the butt of a many internet jokes. It is bizarre. And the CSI episode is called "Fur and Loathing in Vegas." There is also a MTV special on it, which you could find on google video or youtube I'm sure. Oh, and this classic video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CWJgT5NTWg

In the words of Bob Barker

Make sure your Furry is spayed or neutered!!

Grown men and women...

...this is what passes as adults in today's America.

osee

Please see my earlier post. Go talk to a professional.

Seriously.

Just Like CSI

Wow! Saw an episode on CSI that featured this organization. Didn't doubt they were real...truth is stanger than fiction, afterall; just didn't exptect there'd be a group in sleepy little Tidewater.

My coding sucks

Okay... I really need to take a course in computer programming. Here are the links to the sites:

Let me be the first...

Well... here we are Hampton Roads! Those of you that read the article this morning already have a idea of who I am. Those of you that didn't read it, well... might want to invest .53ยข into the Pilot newspaper and find out what the heck these groups of freaks... err... I mean, interesting group of individuals.

Yep! Just when you thought your world couldn't get any weirder, allow me make it weirder. But more seriously, I hope that this article will help shed a better light on the furry fandom. However there is only but so much that can be explain in a short article. So I offer you these sites in hopes that you will understand or choice in being a furry. Take care!

Just what IS "Furry" fandom?
Furry Fandom

Furries

I think that it's really awsome that you all are doing this and I can't wait to read the full story when it comes out. Keep up the great job guys.

u gotta be kidding.............

.......and the Va Pilot thinks this something ANYONE ELSE is interested in ?

Funny... yes, but newsworthy?

I'm always amazed at what the Pilot chooses to run as news, particularly in the online "paper". Is there nothing more newsworthy that the Pilot staff can come up with?

Here are some suggestions:

1) B Hussein Obama's constant flip-flopping on issues, his lack of experience, his WEAK foreign policy stance (and experience), his lack of executive experience in ANY form, etc.

2) VA Budget fiasco with Tim Kaine at the helm - can we not get any better a budget balancing effort than the elementary exercise that has caused localities to have to ante up to cover the state's shortfall?

3) Though hyper-redundant, how about following up on the exploding illegal immigrant population in Tidewater, Virginia, and the USA.

Those might be some good topics for investigative journalism

Finally some interesting news.... NOT!

Good Lord.... I'm all about people having the freedom to do what they like in their own homes. However, dedicating manpower to cover these folks may cause the Pilot to lose out on that Pulitzer.... Or, as my wife said, this may put them over the top!
I need to know what their political views are? Also, how do they feel about an additional tunnel under the Elizabeth River? Most of them look like burrowing animals..... They may have some good insight. VDOT?
I will say that I'll no longer laugh at my good friend who attends an annual Star Trek convention in a Klingon uniform.
God Bless America, including our freaks!

read the article

Read the article and pay attention to the reasons that they give for this behavior. Do they do this for fun? No.

"The reasons range from lonely childhoods to traumatic events."

"These were the only friends we had growing up."

"My other half happens to be furry..."

"...an escape from painful memories..."

"(Lions) helped me get through a lot of troubles..."

These people need help. Medical help. Seriously.

whatever

unemployed mascots

WOW

I saw this a few years ago on an episode of CSI Las Vegas and I can truly say it's much more creepy to see it in the news. Between this and the 'Cornhole League', my hometown has turned into South Park.

PETA

I'm real shocked that PETA hasn't commented on this story yet. Maybe they'll try and buy the company.

LOLOLOL

Furries are LOL!
