The Chesapeake Bay impact crater, trapped in one location for 35 million years, is finally going places.
An image of the massive crater has been plastered on the sides of 2,400 U-Haul moving vans as part of a "SuperGraphics" campaign that puts an image from every state and Canadian province on the familiar vehicles.
Think you've seen it before? Quite possibly, because the design was placed on trucks beginning in late 2006. However, the official unveiling will be at 6:30 p.m. today during the Cape Charles Harbor Party, which is sponsored by the Northampton County Chamber of Commerce, at Mason and Bay avenues in Cape Charles on the Eastern Shore.
Two of the scientists who discovered the crater will be in town as well. David Powars of the U.S. Geological Survey and T. Scott Bruce of the Department of Environmental Quality will be on hand today for the ceremonial whisking away of a black drape from the van.
It features a gigantic sturgeon front and center, with a smaller sting ray behind it. An outline of the crater superimposed on eastern Virginia is in the background.
Powars and Bruce will talk about the significance of the crater, which affects groundwater supplies in much of southeastern Virginia. The crater is about 85 miles across and more than a mile deep at the center, filled with broken rock and covered with silt.

A Great Public Relations Idea.
'Ventures across America' is really smart for Uhaul. The graphics are exceptional and the trucks are rolling billboards for points all across the Nation - Brilliant! Cape Charles is a smart location for the unveiling for this event/discovery - Cape Charles is so close to South Hampton Roads but a world away - It's really a day trip destination and getting there is just a marvel of engineering and forsight not to be taken for granted. chesapeake bay bridge tunnel is a trip in it self.
