Big celebrations set for Admirals' 20th anniversary

Posted to: Admirals Sports

How many different ways can someone say "Happy Anniversary"?

The Norfolk Admirals plan to spend the 2008-09 season finding out. A specially designed logo unveiled today will kick off a host of initiatives aimed at commemorating the 20th season of Admirals hockey in Hampton Roads.

"Twenty years is a big milestone to hit," Admirals general manager Joe Gregory said. "It opens the door to look back at the history here, the past players and coaches, and all the success we've had. We want to celebrate that stuff."

The logo, designed by former Admirals great and current corporate sales manager Dennis McEwen, incorporates the anchor featured in the ECHL Admirals logo with the battleship that dominates the current design. The words "20th anniversary" and "1989-2009" are included.

Plans also are in the works to debut commemorative trading card sets featuring the Top 40 Admirals in franchise history as selected by the team's staff. Eight-card sets will be given away at five games over the course of the season. Sets also will be available for purchase.

In addition, "special guests" from Admirals history will be on hand at various games throughout the campaign.

This season also will mark the second edition of the Admirals alumni game, a contest that was first held during the 2006-07 season. The date of the game is being finalized.

Norfolk will induct the second class of the Admirals Hall of Fame. The list of nominees is being shaped, but Gregory said this year's class probably will be smaller than the four-person contingent that made up last season's inaugural group.
