Letters to the Editor
We welcome your opinion on public issues, in either of two ways. You can submit a letter to the editor for possible publication in the printed edition. The Virginian-Pilot welcomes letters to the editor on all topics, although concise letters (150 words or less) on public issues will receive priority. Letters may be edited for length, style and clarity and writers are limited to one published letter every month. Please add your name, city, street address and daytime telephone number for confirmation.
The other way is to comment on the published letters in this blog. In this online forum, you can comment as much as you want by using the comment box at the end of each entry.

I Agree..
Mary, you are right on about needing to find middle ground and stopping this inane and ignorant character assault by some questioning patriotism and acusing some of being traitors. TR, uh oh you used Bush's staff's words against them!! How dare you bring to light the contradictons so prominent in the current White House. I am sure somehow it is all Clinton's fault. LOL.
Obama said it best
I know there are those who dismiss such beliefs as happy talk. They claim that our insistence on something larger, something firmer and more honest in our public life is just a Trojan Horse for higher taxes and the abandonment of traditional values. And that's to be expected.
Because if you don't have any fresh ideas, then you use stale tactics to scare the voters. If you don't have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from.
Which party does that sound like?
Wrong again CB
Powell Feb'01: "He has not developed any significant capability with respect to weapons of mass destruction. He is unable to project conventional power against his neighbors."
May01: "The Iraqi regime militarily remains fairly weak. It doesn't have the capacity it had 10 or 12 years ago. It has been contained."
Condi July01: "But in terms of Saddam Hussein being there, let's remember that his country is divided, in effect. He does not control the northern part of his country. We are able to keep arms from him. His military forces have not been rebuilt."
UK Gubmint July02: "But the case was thin. Saddam was not threatening his neighbours, and his WMD capability was less than that of Libya, North Korea or Iran. Objectively, the threat from Iraq has not worsened as a result of 11 September. US scrambling to establish a link between Iraq and Al Aaida is so far frankly unconvincing."
Doc
Thanks for spelling that out. I forgot that some young folks who didn't study WWII well might think that capitalism and fascism were synonyms. Cheers, MGM
Fascism is not "right wing"
Or to be more specific, it is not capitalist. All fascist regimes are collectivists in the economic sense.
The Nazi Party was shorthand for the Nationalist Socialist Party.
There are no examples from history of totalitarian regimes with laissez-faire capitalist economic structures.
Its sort of an oxymoron, like Libertarian Dictator.
Totalitarian governments . . .
Can be right or left wing. The idea is to stay near the center. Our splintering out to the right wing and left wing fringes is the scariest part about our country right now. The right wing could become fascist; the left wing could become communist/socialist. We need responsible voices in the center, working together and refusing to see our fellow countrymen as traitors. Just because we differ in viewpoint doesn't make us traitors to each other. Cheers, MGM
Jim
If you fear a coercive totalitarian government, Republicans should be the object of you fear. Evoking Marxism shows complete ignorance of the forces that threaten liberty and privacy.
Communism and capitalism are consolidating into a new word order led by global oligarchs that use fear to distract you from their grip on your life. McCain is a puppet of the corporate oligarchy that right now is planning how to steal your share of the Amercan dream. Snap out it, that right wing hooey your spin is effete and obsolete.
You Joke Now
It may seem humorous now but hang on to your property rights if Obama gets elected with a super-majority in both houses of congress. Can you say, Karl Marx?
Jim King
Ha Ha Ha!!!
Just wondering if he can take one fish and a slice of bread to feed his flock? If so we all should be worried.
That sounds just like it came from the Bible
both make great fiction!
C,B.'s cool aide stand
Bush had ulterior imperial designs. Saddam was the weapon of mass distraction for the neo-con propaganda machine. You have stated nothing new that has not been challenged by most the very people that used to work for Bush. "None so blind as those that refuse to see."
And....
And this is the voice of experience?
BO: "I don’t oppose all wars. What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war. Saddam poses no imminent & direct threat to the US".
Uuumm....yes he "did". Deny it all you want but the man had it in for Israel, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, world oil exports, any terrorist faction that wanted money, american aircraft, american ships,.... do I need to go on? It is pure baloney that he just stopped nuclear and chemical weapons programs. He may not have had the stockpile that we expected but to believe that he was not actively pursuing WMDs is pure idiocy and complete lack of common sense. Figures NObama would say otherwise.
George!
Thanks for asking--last Thursday's chemo made me sleep for almost a week straight but I am back!
I would much rather have Obama, as himself, than Obama beholden to Hillary. I really don't trust that woman. Cheers, MGM
Hillary 2012
Hillary's speech at the convention was the beginning of her 2012 campaign.
Obama will lose this election, the Clintons will see to it. Their fingerprints will not be on the knife in his back, but they will have been pulling the strings.
Hillary will have a much better chance of beating McCain 4 years from now than waiting till 2016, when she will be 69 years old, to run against a fresh GOP face.
Did you think the Book of Obama would not have a Judas?
mgm
Hey lady, hope your feeling well.
Very unlikely Hil-dog would get the nod for the Supreme Court. Plenty of other more qualified and "properly" aligned candidates without the baggage.
You may not like Obama but you must recognize he is not stupid. His best chance is to build a coalition. Nominating Hil-dog would kill that.
Do I have this right??
For the last eight years the Republican laying palms in the path of a man whose every decision has been issued straight from the throne of God and it's Barack Obama who is arrogant?
Bill - cliff notes for ya as you ponder if McCain is "wiser"
"We may muddle through in Afghanistan" WRONG
"[Afghanistan] it's a remarkable success" WRONG
"Afghanistan, we don’t read about anymore because it’s succeeded" WRONG
"The 2nd phase... the 2nd phase is Iraq" WRONG
"we will be welcomed as liberators." WRONG
"Removing Saddam will improve stability in the region" WRONG
"Removing Saddam will improve US interests" WRONG
"The anthrax may have come from Iraq" WRONG
"Antipathy toward the US in the Islamic world might diminish" WRONG
"but the conflict -- the major conflict is over" WRONG
"Iranian is taking al-Qaeda, training them & sending them back." WRONG
"Rich starts at $5 million" WRONG
"I have 4 houses" WRONG
Doc . . .
Haven't you heard the one about Hillary Clinton getting the first Supreme Court job to open up in the next eight years??? Cheers, MGM
Thanks
I know I can look to the letters most days for a dose of nut-baggery. Here's today's winner!
For the previous commenter: Your point on Supreme Court appointments is valid - just look at what the current yahoo has done - but why are judges you agree with not activists?
The problem
The problem, Doc, is that we have to work with what we got and unfortunately, it's not much. So the question becomes, how do we play the hand we got?
Perhaps some examples of who is "wiser" will help you Bill
BO: "I don’t oppose all wars. What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war. Saddam poses no imminent & direct threat to the US"
"Even a successful war will require a US occupation of undetermined length at undetermined cost with undetermined consequences"
"We should be putting more troops in Afghanistan"
___
JM: "There’s no doubt in my mind that... that we will be welcomed as liberators." Oct01: "The 2nd phase... the 2nd phase is Iraq"
Prominent advocate for shifting the focus from Afghanistan to Iraq. Has repeatedly gotten Afghan wrong:
"We may muddle through in Afghanistan"
"[Afghanistan] it's a remarkable success”
“Afghanistan, we don’t read about anymore because it’s succeeded"
Four years?
If Obama gets to appoint Supreme Court Justices, the people are going to regret it a lot more than four years.
We would be far better served by electing Bob Barr and getting Supreme Court nominees who actually would enforce and interpret the Constitution instead of activists who will try to remake the nature of this country from the bench.
