Bracing for boredom in Beijing

The Olympic Games open today in Beijing and I’m trying mightily not to yawn to muster up some interest.

Truth is, the breakneck winter games with downhill skiing, ski jumping, luge and bobsled are far more exciting. Heck, even the weird sport of curling is not without its charms.

Archery? Fencing? Softball? Not so much.

Yes, I know the athletes are superb. And, yes, swimming can be exciting. So can some track and field events.

Perhaps the fact that these games are being held in China with its detestable record of human rights, adds an extra measure of repugnance to the 8-08-08 spectacle.

I’m sure the image-conscious Chinese government never intended to scare tourists away by hosting the games, but press coverage of the foul air that blankets its cities makes the thought of travel to this coal-burning country more sickening than scintillating.

The XXIX Olympiad? Pass the remote.

LOL!

I have a new comment

I'm not sure how anyone can be bored watching Michael Phelps and the other US men swimmers walk around with their suits pulled halfway down. Replay please.... :)

Opening Ceremony and Laura Bush

Does that woman own a dress?

All hail our red masters

Better get used to saying that this century, folks.

And kerry - what are you, an idiot? Leave your petty politics out of it.

Nothing like seeing a dream achieved

I don't like the location (China), but aside from that I've always loved watching the Olympics. It's a rare chance to see people achieve their dreams.

I don't see all the hoopla about the US men's basketball team, but who could remain unmoved while watching the US men's 400m freestyle race KICK ASS last night?! I had to laugh at the thought of that arrogant Alain Bernard eat his FRENCH-fried crow!!! TEEHEEHAHA, FRANCE!!!!

Obviously you and the President agree

He couldn't refrain from staring at his watch and rolling his eyes with fidgety impatience when called upon to behave like a dignified head of state during the opening ceremonies.

All the nuances of international relations and competitive sport must seem pretty boring without the chance you'll see someone get severely injured in a high speed crash. Although I'm not sure why you want to announce your lack of sophistication so publicly.

Half empty

Kerry's glass is always half empty. Many of us had dreams of the olympics for most of our lives. Me personally, could I ever even have come close? Absolutely not. But dreams are always valid. Now that I'm well beyond the age of even being able to dream about going to the olympics, I, like millions of others, get a whole lot of enjoyment watching these athletes live out the sometimes one single moment that they've dreamt of and worked for all of their lives. It's too bad that people like Kerry and her omnipresent friend and fan BCAT fail to keep in mind that that's what the olympics are about and why they'll always be looked upon more fondly and with more excitement that Kerry Dougherty's column ever will be. Sorry Kerry, but us regular working class folk will always like the summer olympics.

hey kerry

Check out the medals we've already won. I'm very pround of our team USA, sure hope you are.

flipsflops

Good Point; I'm not interested, and I'm not Watching.

If you think it's boring,

If you think it's boring, then don't watch.

Well at least we have something

And that something is that, no matter how one views the summer olympics, they were around long before Kerry and her column and they'll be around long after. They have always been more popular and welcome than Kerry's column and they always will be. So just you keep right on moaning about how boring the olympics are kerry, but just keep in mind that your opinions have brought about more yawns in just a few years than the olympics will bring about over the next few centuries.

Boring would be a notch up !

NBC will make it even more boring with all of it's "Olympic Moments" and background stories . Too much USA cheer leading by the media , at least we don't have to suffer through anymore Katy Kouric interviews .
Ann Curry is bad enough and getting worse with the tear jerkers . Enough of the sappy stories , show us even the events that the USA doesn't do good in . It is supposed to be about sports and excellence regardless of the medal count .

I'm not fan of china, but

I am a fan of the olympics, winter and summer, and I always look forward to them, but unlike Kerry, I prefer the summer to the winter. I love the gymnastics, track and all the swimming events. I just think China was a poor choice, and pray there is no violence. I heard Bush on the news state he's proud to represent the U.S. at the games. Sorry Bush, but it's the athlets that represnet us, certainly not you. Didn't he say something just as stupid at another olympic year?
