Chesapeake woman speaks tonight at Democratic convention

Posted to: Chesapeake News Presidential Election

A Chesapeake woman is set to take the stage tonight at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

Beth Robinson, who was invited last week by Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign, plans to speak on behalf of military wives and families. Robinson’s husband, Matt, is a Marine who has served in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Robinson has multiple sclerosis and has said that she plans to talk about health care.

“Unless you’re a healthy person, the system doesn’t work well,” she told The Virginian-Pilot in an interview last week. “They don’t make it simple for people, especially for a person who hasn’t learned to be an advocate for themselves.”

Robinson will speak as part of the convention’s American Voices Center Stage feature. She is scheduled to speak at about 9 p.m. EST. She will be appearing after former President Bill Clinton and before U.S. Sen. John Kerry.

Excellent Speech!

First class from content to delivery. Her patiotism and service are much appreciated by this American.

Another person with a huge ego

These big egos tend to run in the Obama crowd. Of course he's the ego-in-chief. This has nothing to do with military families, this is all about her to her. That's plainly obvious.

Obama can save us with cuts

Now that he is nominated, it is time to talk about drastic cuts to our bloated military. Closing places like NOB, Oceana will save us enough budget money to put together real programs to help those who really need help (minority communities) where single moms can be relieved of having to work so they can receive govmt supplment to raise their children. More minorities can be around for their children with the stay home, be a familty and get paid programs. Our Military is bloated, needs a 75% cut in personnel. Our military was designed to be a defensive service and not a floatilla that goes around bossing and threatening the world.

True Bravery- Obama-not military

We losely throw out the term "Hero" to our Military, Police and Firefighters who all have the highest degree of protection whether it be equipment, armor or protective vests. Which this lessens their risk. But Obama didnt have such luxury. He is the true example of the the term "Hero". Laying in a medical facility (Mccain) for 5 years isnt brave, courageous or heroic. Remember our military is paid, Obama and his family have and continue to struggle financially and dont have the special benefits that cops and military get (drastically reduced groceries, free medical ect). Military, firefighters, police are important but no more important or brave than any other job yet a African American who has been under extreme intense daily media discrimination and racism--thats a real Hero!

Come on. Give Mrs. Robinson a chance

In this day and time it's silly to suggest that there is anything like an "average military family." Military families of 2008 are far more diverse, more affluent and far more integrated into the communities where they live than military families were 20 or 30 years ago. What's common is that it's never been easy to be the family member of an active duty military member. In this respect, Mrs. Robinson has as much right as any military spouse to share her experiences and perspective.

Tricare, but the way, is not the model for universal health care. It is a closed system with its own providers. The universal care plans being discussed are delivered through private providers, much like Medicare (which is nothing more than universal health care under a different name).

Why?

If this person is going to go on national tv and say that the healthcare for the military doesn't work, which is a government healthcare program.... Then tell me why the Democrats want to give us government healthcare?

Disgusted

I am a proud wife of a United States Marine. I am very thankful that I'm allowed to stay home with my children and raise them and have the healthcare coverage that we do. I've never had to work a day in my life (unless I wanted too) and I too have MS. To not have to work a full time job and deal with my illness is a blessing and I cherish it. I wish others felt the same way. Beth Robinson in no way speaks for wives in the military. We know what we have and we knew what we were in for when we signed on the dotted line.

Military Spouse

I personally don't want her commenting on what it is to be a military spouse. I saw the article last week on the Obama Campaigns "discussion with military families" and was amazed at what made up the "round table" discussion group! It wasn't even a good representation of the average military family!

WIll this be an unintended insight into Federal Health Care?

Note that Mrs Robinson is a military wife, therefore she is a beneficiary of the military's medical system, "Tricare." If she has disparaging comments to make about bureaucratic red tape and difficult access to medical care that she has had to endure, then ask yourself, "Is this the kind of medical system I want for the entire country?" If you think "managed care" is bad NOW, wait until Uncle Sam is in the driver's seat! "Nationalized Health Insurance" sounds good when you don't have any. But imagine if you had to hassle through a maze of disinterested civil service workers or clueless contract employees to negotiate all your medical care. Americans do not want to live in a socialist society, yet that is what the Democrat Party is offering. Beware!!!
