Dollar Tree reports sales up 13 percent in second quarter

Dollar Tree Inc. announced Thursday that sales for the second quarter of 2008 totaled nearly $1.1 billion, up 13 percent from $971 million during the same period last year.

“Sales were strong throughout the quarter,” Bob Sasser, president and chief executive officer of the Chesapeake-based discount retailer, said in a statement. “Our stores are more relevant than ever for the times, providing extreme value every day on products that customers want and need.”

The sales increase, he said, was powered by demand for food, health and beauty care items.

Sales in comparable stores, which were open for at least 12 months, rose nearly 7 percent during the quarter.

The company plans to release its earning results for the second quarter on Aug. 27.
