PORTSMOUTH

A 33-year-old woman has filed a lawsuit against the Hampton Roads Regional Jail and Prison Health Services, the jail's medical provider, contending that a leg infection was not diagnosed or treated appropriately.

Patrice Knight was an inmate in July 2006 and had "an inflamed lesion on her left leg," according to the lawsuit, filed in Circuit Court. Knight alleges she sought treatment for a week and was not provided antibiotics or pain relievers.

When she was transferred to Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center, she was diagnosed with a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection, her suit says.

It says she needed extensive surgeries and that she spent almost two weeks in the hospital. It also states that later, in jail, she did not receive the post-surgery care that the hospital's physicians had ordered.

Knight alleges that as a result, her wounds did not heal properly. She contends she almost lost her leg and has suffered scarring, nerve damage and loss of leg function.

The $2.5 million lawsuit names the state, the jail and Prison Health Services and several medical personnel.

"We are aware of this matter and we are looking into it," said Pat Nolan, a spokesman for the Tennessee-based company. "While we cannot comment on the specifics of the case, we can say that Prison Health Services is committed to delivering quality care," he said.

Lt. Col. Moses Pollard, a spokesman for the regional jail, said officials there have not seen the lawsuit and could not comment.

Perspective, for We Posters

We should remove the board, from our own eye, before judging the speck, in an other's.

Reality

Is that many people in jail, haven't been tried or convicted of anything. Some are in jail awaiting hearings or trial, following an arrest for something they may or may not have done. Sometimes, even material witnesses are jailed, to ensure they show up for a hearing. There are innocent people in jail or prison, even after trial & conviction. Every month, people are released, mostly after DNA analysis. Some after several, if not many, years. Yet, that's not the point. Medical care, however it's cost is paid, should be at the very least, adequate.

so let me get this straight,

so let me get this straight, she needs to take responsibility for contracting a MRSA virus?? ok, lady...i believe you've won the award for the day...

o yeah, i have a quick question...how many people are released on a daily basis due to being wrongly convicted?? oh, ok...thats what i thought...not saying that this lady was innocent, but you never know...ESPECIALLY when you get all of your facts from a mediocre local newspaper...

Feel dumb when she wins?

No. IF that were to happen, I would feel disgusted.

Had this lady NOT committed a crime, she would have been free to choose and be responsible for her own medical care.

She received taxpayer paid medical care...and that was fair. It was her own fault that she was not in the position to choose medical care that was to her liking. The taxpayers should not be held liable for that.

This lady needs to take PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for her situation.

Stupid Comments

I have read comments that most of you have left over time and I feel that you never know a person's situation until you are in their shoes. There are doctor's and lawyer's who feel the same way until one of their family members is convicted. Criminal or not fair is fair. Behind these comments there are really some evil people in this world. You all will feel dumb when she wins!

With all due respect...

While people in jail deserve adequate medical care and definitely don't deserve to lose limbs or lives as a part of their punishment...they are in jail because they HAVE been judged and HAVE committed crimes.

If this lady hadn't committed crimes (serious or not so serious) she would not have been in jail, and therefore free to seek (and pay for) her own medical care. (Cannot help but wonder how that would have worked out, given I know how much treating MRSA cost a friend of mine when her daughter was infected?)

She didn't lose her leg or her life. It was her own fault she was in jail. Perhaps she should move on and resolve never to find herself in this position again.

passing judgement

sometimes we should get all the information before pass judgement. I do have some knowledge to know that this person was actually working outside and was bitten by something. People go to jail to serve sentences for crimes committed, but not to lose legs or life. True, you can only go by the information that was given to you, but always remember that you can not be so quick to pass judgement. People are in jail for many different reasons. Some serious and some not so serious.

Horribly contagious

While I don't have a huge amount of sympathy for criminals...my concern is that MRSA is horribly contagious and the risk for something like this not being properly treated is high for the deputies and their families....and yes, even the inmates.

That being said, this woman needs to recognize that she could have died from MRSA and the fact she didn't indicates her treatment was adequate. What more can you expect as a criminal?

wow,,,

that is messed up...the saying goes "Do the crime, do the TIME." I've never heard "Do the crime, do the time, and take home a free MRSA infection." It's funny that its the same posters (the peanut gallery) that are basically laughing at someone's misfortunes....i said it before and i'll say it again...

What goes around, comes around.

she was serving her time

and should have been medically treated. There is a certain amout of accountability even for prison medical staff as well as all prison staff. Yes she commited a crime, but she was paying for it. We don't send people to prison to be treated worse than we would tread a dog.

I am probably what most

I am probably what most would call "liberal" but even I thought 'get real' on this one. Drop your lawsuit , learn a lesson and stay out of jail.

Treated better than non criminals!

I think we should all get locked up if we need health care we cannot afford! 3 hots and a cot plus heat and ac, cable tv, telephones, gym, library and healthcare! Many people on the street might be able to afford such things if they did not pay taxes so these criminals can have them.

Jail treatment

Good point and well said tj!

Hey TJ

Sometimes innocent people end up in jail. Also, if she contracted MRSA, so can the deputies...

I'd like to feel sorry for you

I'd like to feel sorry for you, but I'm one of the many law-abiding, taxpaying citizens who don't have health coverage. Be happy you had what you had at our expense, you ingrate.

Too bad

You shouldn't have put yourself in the position to be in jail in the first place. I wonder where you came from and if you would have had medical care at all had you not been in the prison.

Are you kidding?

Wow....maybe we should all commit crimes and live on the streets so that when we go to jail we can claim medical abuse and collect a huge payday. I am so tired of people thinking that society should pay for their bad choices. Get a real job, quit using drugs and quit being a burden on society.

Boo Hoo....

Too bad for you isn't it? Just another case of an inmate that is trying to get something for nothing.
