VIDEO: Gov. Kaine on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart." |
Gov. Timothy M. Kaine flashed a self-deprecating sense of humor during his appearance on an episode of "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" that was broadcast late Tuesday night, joking about the vice presidential vetting process and a facial feature he has become know for.
Stewart, host of the Comedy Central program that offers a humorous take on current affairs, asked the governor about his experience as a finalist to be Barack Obama's vice presidential nominee.
"It's intense," Kaine replied.
"I mean, people know a lot of things about me that I never thought I'd reveal. They really go into detail," he continuted, noting that questioners want to know "your high school girlfriend's middle name, and then you give a name and then they come back and tell you she said she was never your girlfriend."
Stewart responded by jokingly comparing the selection process to a reality show elimination ceremony.
"Does Senator Obama give each person a rose that goes on to the next round?," the host wondered.
"It's very mysterious. It's probably something like at the Vatican with smoke," Kaine, a Catholic, replied to Stewart's question about how vice presidential candidates advance.
Kaine's segment on the show clocked in at just under four minutes and was shown near the end of the half-hour program that aired at 11 p.m.
The taped program - Kaine's segment was recorded earlier Tuesday - was broadcast as New York Sen. Hillary Clinton was delivering a speech on the convention floor.
At another point in the interview, when Stewart rattled off the names of other vice presidential candidates who had been considered like Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh and the eventual nominee, Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, Kaine chimed in with the name of television personality Ed McMahon, drawing laughs from the studio audience.
As he has done in other interviews since Biden was picked, the governor praised the running mate chosen by Obama, and said he was flattered to be considered.
When Stewart probed Kaine about a future job in a potential Obama administration, the governor said he will "figure it out" when his term ends in January 2010.
The interview ended as Kaine presented Stewart with a button being distributed by the governor's political action committee. The round orange button looks like a typical smiley face with one distinct difference: It depicts Kaine "uncontrollable left eyebrow" raised quizzically.
Kaine has taken some ribbing in political circles because that eyebrow sometimes twitches when he makes television appearances.
The show will be rebroadcast this evening.

Better watch that tape again, Mr. Greenmun
The governor said he'd "had some trouble" with transportation, not that it wasn't his forte. And besides, he was referring to his difficulty making any headway with the General Assembly, not with his understanding of the transportation challenges facing our state. It was Governor Tim Kaine, after all, who pushed the issue and convened a special session of the General Assembly to address transportation when conservative legislators tried instead to pretend they could make transportation problems disappear by simply ignoring them. And rather than demonstrate any kind of leadership, and seemingly just to show how obstinate, inconsistent and out of touch they could be, conservative legislators again betrayed the trust, responsibility and expectations bestowed upon them by citizens across the state by refusing to make any progress or bring any better solutions to the table. Is it any wonder people across the country are in a mood for change?
Never heard of The Daily Show?!?
Where have you been??? The show is hilarious and Kaine is great for VA. I wasn't surprised he wasn't chosen as VP, but that's OK, VA needs him here. If you can't appreciate the show, and you actually believe young liberals use The Daily Show as their single news source, you really should WAKE UP. They have a sense of humor. Maybe you should get one.
A hard core Conservative that enjoys the Daily Show
I too liked Craig Kilgore better, but I find John Steward very funny, witty, and funny. Granted the show has a left lean to it, but laughing at the absurdity of our political theater is good for one's state of mind. I recommend the Daily Show if you enjoy SNL-like humor. Glad to hear Govenor Kaine admit that Transportation is not his forte, LOL! That 'ole Unconstitutional Regional Authority mess he helped create in the nightmare that never ends . . .
Funny?
It used to be funny back when Craig Kilborn hosted. And then up until the 2000 election when Jon Stewart lost his mind over Gore losing. It was then that they stopped making fun of everybody and was rebuilt as a daily attack against Bush/Republicans. No surprise that liberals like Chris find it funny. The sad thing is that a large portion of the uninformed voter crowd (you know, 18-21 year olds) gets their news from this show. It's a comedy show, there is no news to be had there. Just liberal bias.
Says it all
Kaine should be on a comedy show because his time as governor has been a joke.
Yawn!
You have got to be kidding me. That was the dullest and most boring interview ever. But, then again, it matches the interviewee...dull and boring.
Great show
The Daily Show and Stephen Colbert are the funniest shows on television. If you haven't seen them, you should.
Never heard of the Daily Show???
It is one of the greatest shows on TV! Actually, Kaine will be right at home...
