Gov. Kaine OKs reuse plan for Fort Monroe after it's vacated

Posted to: Hampton Military

HAMPTON

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine has signed a reuse plan for Fort Monroe that serves as a blueprint for what happens when the Army leaves the historic property along the Chesapeake Bay in 2011.

Kaine's signature means the reuse plan, developed over the past 18 months by the Fort Monroe Federal Area Development Authority, now goes to the Department of Defense for approval.

The plans call for protecting the historic character of the 570-acre post, which the Army began using in 1819, by keeping historic structures continually occupied, restricting development within the moated stone fortress, and ensuring that new construction outside the fortress follows strict architectural and design guidelines.

The plan also emphasizes the importance of generating revenue to offset the cost of maintaining the property and providing basic services.

In a statement, Kaine said the plan "ensures this spectacular and historic property will be enjoyed by many generations to come."

He is scheduled to tour the base today.

Fort Monroe was slated for closure in 2005 as part of the federal base realignment and closure process.

Most personnel are being reassigned to nearby Fort Eustis and Fort Knox, Ky.

Won't be long

Till the developers screw this historical site up. Apartments, strip malls with a nail shop, beauty supply store, insurance shop and 20 restaurants not to mention half a dozen conveniences stores and box stores across from each other.

The Fort Has never looked better than now

I spent all of sunday Aug. 17th at the fort and it was such a rush.
the Casemate museum has recently received an upgrade, more artifacts, movies, history to share. The living areas within the moat area of the Fortress are pristine and lively. It's a pity more locals haven't visited.
All it takes is a car with a recent state inspection, vehicle registration and photo I.D.'s for all adults. It's Free! Take a picnic basket and enjoy the big view from the Fort, plenty of rest rooms in the fort area, etc. check it out now before the developers muck it up. I will defend this property from all fast food operations because they will surely accelerate the forts demise, keep them out side the gate as they are now.
