Fay won't spoil weather in Hampton Roads this weekend

Posted to: News Weather

What late August should be, that's what this weekend will be. Highs in the low to mid 80s, lows in the upper 60s. So says the National Weather Service in Wakefield.

Not even the looming prospect of Tropical Storm Fay will dampen the good weather, said weather service meteorologist Larry Brown. There will be a very low chance of rain today through Sunday, Brown said, with the chance of precipitation increasing to 20 percent by Tuesday; 30 percent by Wednesday. That rain will come courtesy of whatever's left of Fay within a few days.

The weather service issued a warning this morning of a moderate risk of rip currents today at the lower Eastern Shore, Virginia beaches and toward the northern Outer Banks. Rough surf and a high risk of rip currents were expected from the Currituck Beach Light south to Surf City.

The storm will weaken as it moves over land, Brown said. It could take a path into Tennessee, or further east, into Virginia. By that time, Brown said, Fay shouldn't even qualify as a tropical storm.

"We need the rain, but overall it should be pretty nice," Brown said.

Air quality today in Hampton Roads is expected to be good, according to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.
