Men who cheat on their wives are scoundrels. Men who cheat on their cancer-stricken wives are contemptible.
Yes, we're going to talk about John Edwards today. Don't start with the "he's-not-an-elected-official" mantra, either.
Just last year, Edwards was begging Americans to elect him president. A few weeks ago, he was said to be on the short list for the Democratic vice presidential pick. In actuality, Edwards was probably in line for a plum job - perhaps attorney general - in a Barack Obama administration.
We won't have to worry about that any more.
Think about this man's judgment - or lack of it. Not only did he engage in reckless, self-destructive behavior, but when confronted by reporters in a Beverly Hills hotel during the wee hours of the morning, what did he do?
Edwards cowered in a bathroom like a little girl.
The thought that he was nearly elected vice president four years ago makes me ill.
Sorry to be discussing John Edwards' sex life. Truth is, I don't really care about it. But what should bother all of us are the bold lies he told the public, the fact that his mistress was on his payroll and, more alarmingly, that something that looks a lot like hush money was paid to her by one of Edwards' pals.
Oh yeah, and the hypocrisy of it all. There's always that.
This scandal shouldn't go away just because Edwards will. The Federal Election Commission ought to review how his campaign funds and PAC money were spent. The IRS should ensure that taxes were paid on the loot that secretly changed hands.
Two Americas, indeed.
I never thought I'd write these words, but compared with John Edwards, Bill Clinton was an altar boy. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there were never allegations that any of Clinton's henchmen offered Monica Lewinsky money to keep quiet. Plus, Hillary was in robust health when the president was frolicking in the Oval Office.
Edwards is learning a lesson here. Live by the family narrative, die by it.
During his campaigns, the former North Carolina senator salted his speeches with personal references to his mill-worker father and his wife's battle with cancer. That turns this extramarital affair into just the latest chapter in the John Edwards Story. It's an appalling addendum.
Democrats should be royally disgusted with Edwards. Had the primary season gone differently and Edwards won the nomination or been added to the Obama ticket, he could have nuked his own party when this became public.
At the center of this sorry saga is Elizabeth Edwards. First she lost a son. Now she has terminal cancer and small children at home. As she faces her own uncertain future, she has to deal with this public humiliation. Not caused by the press, incidentally. Caused entirely by her husband.
During the "Nightline" interview Friday, Edwards actually blurted out that his wife's cancer was in remission when he started cheating on her.
At that moment, it hit me. There may never have been an American politician with deeper character flaws than John Edwards.
When faced with his own astonishing awfulness during the past months, the indignant Edwards dismissed it as "tabloid trash."
It was trash, all right. John Edwards trash.

Saddam vs Edwards
Wow, I am just now reading Kerry's column and the last post is about Saddam and WMD??
Talk about off topic.
This is the problem with allowing "comments" on news stories/editorials. It seems that most people lack that part of the brain that keeps them from typing something this is either stupid, hateful, or off topic.
you are correct
"This my last post about this as it is obvious this is going no where."
Posting old quotes when times and lies have been unfolding will definately lead nowhere.
Lores.
Yes, Saddam removed his WMD. Bush knew that and invaded anyway!
I think Bush said it best when he described the Iraq war as a "catastrophic success".
This my last post about this
This my last post about this as it is obvious this is going no where.
CIA Failed
There is no question that the Russian effort to remove Iraqi WMD systems was the most successful intelligence operation of the 21st century. The Russians were able to move hundreds of tons of chemical, biological and nuclear materials without being discovered by CIA satellites or NSA radio listening posts.
"There is a clear sense on how effective they were," noted Shaw.
"The fact that the CIA did not know shows just how successful the Russian operation was," he concluded.
"I am absolutely convinced that there are weapons...I saw evidence back in 1998 when we would see the inspectors being barred from gaining entry into a warehouse for three hours with trucks rolling up and then moving those trucks out." -- Clinton's Secretary of Defense William Cohen in April of 2003
"Iraq is not the only nation in the world to possess weapons of mass destruction, but it is the only nation with a leader who has used them against his own people." -- Tom Daschle in 1998

On a new note, every wonder who profits from high gas prices? Well except us with 401k's.
Yep Nancy Pelosi
Pickens and Pelosi now share the same talking points downplaying the need to drill and open up more access to American oil. Instead, the Pickens pie-in-the-sky plan campaign proposes to completely replace natural gas with wind power in power generation and theoretically free up natural gas for America’s transportation needs.

Dilemma . . .
This did start out of a discussion of John Edwards and adultery . . . I know it has morphed far away from Kerry's column.
McCain was an adulterer many years ago. Obama broke the drug laws many years ago. So both have been immoral.
McCain is for stem cell research. Obama is for no limits on abortion, best I can tell. Stance on abortion is important to me, though maybe not to the rest of ya'll (agree to disagree).
I once promised myself, as a military member, that I would always vote in every election, esp the Presidential elections.
Think I'll have to decide by reading the positions on support for the military *very* carefully. Cheers, MGM
Remember well your history ...
Barack Obama, Oct 2, 2002:
"What I am opposed to is a dumb war. What I am opposed to is a rash war. What I am opposed to is the cynical attempt by Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz and other arm-chair, weekend warriors in this Administration to shove their own ideological agendas down our throats, irrespective of the costs in lives lost and in hardships borne.
What I am opposed to is the attempt by political hacks like Karl Rove to distract us from a rise in the uninsured, a rise in the poverty rate, a drop in the median income ...
That’s what I’m opposed to. A dumb war. A rash war. A war based not on reason but on passion, not on principle but on politics."

Based on the lies Bush and Cheney presented to the American people and the world about Saddam almost everyone thought the war in Iraq was probably the right thing, but let's not forget what we were given as fact by those two and even to this day were nothing but LIES.
Got it!
So...as long as the cheater admits it's his/her fault and the cheatee forgives him/her...that should be the end of it.
Excellent...now can we please move on to something that's actually germaine to the running of the country?

Whats interesting about your quotes regarding Mercan politicians is the issue of whether they are quoting Bush-admin-filtered National Intelligence Estimate & the other admin propaganda (Chalabi, Curveball, Cheney, Judy Miller at the NYT, ...). The Bushers were not going to produce an NIE until forced to do so by the Dem leadership. An NIE usually takes 4-6 months to produce. This one was done in 2 weeks & was made availabe to review the day before the vote, and the declass'd version was scrubbed.
Quoting Chirac is funny. How did France vote when Powell got Shrub to go back to the UN? Obama was right. McCain was terribly wrong.
We can't read John McCain's mind . . .
I just googled numerous sources about his divorce. They were critical enough of him that, even if they were conservative, they were balanced.
He *always* claimed the divorce was his fault and his settlement was very generous (two houses, a couple of thousand dollars a month in alimony/child support back in the 70's, and all of their household possessions). The Reagans helped her get a job in D.C. She still adores John McCain and campaigns for him. Her two children from an earlier marriage yet still consider him "dad" (Doug lives here, as I recall).
She had an accident while he was a POW. She became four inches shorter and gained weight (that's not really "disabled"). He said she had changed while he was gone, then he had affairs. Nowhere does he say he left her due to her gaining weight, nor would any self-respecting politician say that--so connect the dots if you will, but we can't really read h

"I will be voting to give the president of the United States the authority to use force - if necessary - to disarm Saddam Hussein because I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security." -- John F. Kerry, Oct 2002
"We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction." -- Ted Kennedy, September 27, 2002
"There is no doubt that Saddam Hussein's regime is a serious danger, that he is a tyrant, and that his pursuit of lethal weapons of mass destruction cannot be tolerated. He must be disarmed." -- Ted Kennedy, Sept 27, 2002
no pass from me
I'm not giving McCain a pass on his extramarital activities. Plenty of conservatives have fallen short, too. Newt Gingrich comes to mind. The difference is that I am disgusted no matter who can't control himself while liberals contend that one can have a personal and a professional life that are unrelated. I reject that point of view. You are either honest or you aren't. Integrity isn't something one can just turn on and off whenever convenient. I'm not saying that leaders are flawless, only that we have the right to hold them to a higher standard. This is even more the case with elective office, as these folks put themselves up for examination, almost all of the time selling themselves as being more capable, moral and otherwise qualified as the next guy (and presumably than I).
Remember well your history and not what they say today.
"In the four years since the inspectors left, intelligence reports show that Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including Al Qaeda members, though there is apparently no evidence of his involvement in the terrible events of September 11, 2001. It is clear, however, that if left unchecked, Saddam Hussein will continue to increase his capacity to wage biological and chemical warfare, and will keep trying to develop nuclear weapons. Should he succeed in that endeavor, he could alter the political and security landscape of the Middle East, which as we know all too well affects American security." -- Hillary Clinton, October 10, 2002

It always
amazes me what comments are printed and which ones get culled.
Aren't there more important things to worry about?
Sorry, but I don't think that marital fidelity should be the litmus test of a leader. This is a family matter and the media and the public should keep their noses out.
Too bad it got buried
Because David Campbell's comment below is the most important post I read.
Conservatives are all over Edwards but they, as usual, are giving a pass to McCain -- an adulterer who abandoned his wife and family after she was disfigured in an accident.
Just another republican "values" candidate, I guess.
character
How telling that so many of you don't seem to believe you deserve better of your leaders. I'm sorry, but I hold my leaders to a high standard and I expect my troops to do the same of me. Leading by example is a cornerstone of good leadership, but I guess that isn't too important to the left. Witness Al Gore's hypocrisy - he uses something like three or four times the average home's energy consumption, rides around in private jets and owns a fleet of SUVs, all the while telling the rest of us to conserve energy.
Yes, having a voracious sexual appetite is typical of great leaders. Exceptional leaders, however, have to discipline to keep it in check.
The powerful . . .
I remember hearing a senior Navy person (male) once say that all of the great leaders in history had voracious sexual appetites, and so did he.
Of course, he wasn't thinking of the statistics. In my time, less than half of Navy men on deployment cheated on their wives (maybe 35-40%) but . . . 35-40% do not make admiral or general in the end. So, maybe all admirals and generals could have voracious sexual appetites (that doesn't mean they all cheat--their wives could be equally matched to them!!!), *but* not all people with voracious sexual appetites make admiral or general. The correlation doesn't work both ways.
I think people who want to justify doing what they want to do will find a way of comparing themselves to great generals/admirals or of saying "everyone is doing it." Cheers, MGM
As sad as this is, I pretty
As sad as this is, I pretty much expect that men in power will cheat. I honestly don't think it's an "I don't love my wife" thing as much as it is a power thing.
It would be interesting to see a list of men vs. women in power (elected officials, not wives of officials) and compare how much more one gender cheats than the other.
We should all mind our own business
Why is it, that the best thing most of us have time to do is get into somebody else's personal life? Just leave him alone. He lied, he cheated, he stole money, he paid money, what else is new? Name a politician that is honest, you can't do it. All politicians are lying about something because they have to appease the entire country that they serve and it's not possible without lying about something. He's not running for office now, he's a private citizen just like all of us here. Let him be with his wife for the time she may have left and leave them alone already.
VBAttorney
I am surprised an attorney would make a statement like that. Bill Clinton’s situation was way different than this one. They tried to get Clinton first because he tried to have sex with one of his employees when he was governor and when she refused, he made her life miserable (Paula Jones), typical sexual harrasment situation. Then, when he lied under oath about having sex outside of marriage, they brought forth the perjury charges, because that is easier to prosecute (same thing Martha Stewart was eventually nailed for) and Lewinsky came into play. The Democrats played it exceptionally well, diverting the attention away from the sexual harrasment and brushing it off as a private matter between him and Lewinski.
although
although you probably won't see my comments until they're buried, because they're being sat on by the staff as usual.
I served
I served and was even in central america during the Reagan/Ollie North years. My brothers were in Vietnam and my father was in Africa and India during WWII. See my previous comments.
Oh Paleeze
So Kerry makes the comment that 'I have never seen a politician with so many character flaws'? Please give me a break, George W. Bush is a true sociopath that has so much blood on his hands, dead American troops by the thousands, scores of thousands maimed and crippled, for a bogus war! And he sleeps fine at night. Please do not dare compare an affair no matter how sordid to the despicable and heinous acts of some Idealogical nutcase like Bush!
No answer for Republican hypocrisy?
So you change the subject. You are definitely in step with your puppet masters.
I bet you didnt serve.
I bet you didnt serve.
Republican quotes
Since you like quotes from the 90's:
"You can support the troops but not the president."
---Rep Tom Delay (R-TX)
"Well, I just think it's a bad idea. What's going to happen is they're going to be over there for 10, 15, maybe 20 years."
---Joe Scarborough (R-FL)
"Explain to the mothers and fathers of American servicemen that may come home in body bags why their son or daughter have to give up their life?"
---Sean Hannity, Fox News, 4/6/99
"[The] President . . . is once again releasing American military might on a foreign country with an ill-defined objective and no exit strategy. He has yet to tell the Congress how much this operation will cost. And he has not informed our nation's armed forces about how long they will be away from home. These strikes do not make for a sound foreign policy."
---Sen Rick Santorum (R-PA)
"American foreign policy is now one huge big mystery. Simply put, the administrat
Guess what?
He's no longer in the Presidential race so who cares!!! Let the man and his wife deal with this privately. Trust me...he knows that he messed up for cheating on his sick wife.
