Madonna's allusion to John McCain alongside Adolf Hitler in a video accompanying her new concert tour is "stupid," Barack Obama confidant and Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine said Tuesday.
But Obama has no duty to comment on the outspoken 50-year-old pop star linking the presumed Republican presidential nominee to despots past and present, Kaine said in a radio interview.
Kaine said on his monthly call-in show on Washington's WTOP radio that he was unaware of the video montage played as part of Madonna's new "Sticky and Sweet" concert tour. The video groups McCain's likeness with those of Hitler and Zimbabwe's dictator, Robert Mugabe.
Later in the video presentation, Obama appears in a sequence with former vice president Al Gore, slain Beatle John Lennon and Mahatma Gandhi.
When a caller to the show from Warrenton asked Kaine about it, he replied: "If anybody is making that kind of a characterization, they're stupid and it's wrong."
Yet when a cartoon depicting Obama and his wife as flag-burning terrorists bumping fists in the Oval Office was on the New Yorker magazine's cover or a new book used false rumors and distortions to portray Obama as a closet radical, Kaine noted, McCain and his allies didn't rush to Obama's defense.
"A magazine runs a cover with an unflattering portrait of Senator Obama or some right-wing goofball writes a largely libelous book with a lot of lies about Obama, you don't see the McCain camp jumping in to comment," said Kaine, who is personally close to Obama and was on his final list of potential running mates.
The New Yorker defended its cover cartoon as satirical and intended to promote a story that addressed common falsehoods and misperceptions about Obama, including that he is a Muslim.
The book to which Kaine alluded was "The Obama Nation" by Jerome Corsi, who has a record of making offensive comments about the Pope, Muslims and Democratic politicians, as well as promoting fringe theories about plots to merge the United States, Canada and Mexico into one country.
When McCain was asked about the book earlier this month, he smiled and said, "gotta keep your sense of humor."
Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Va., said Madonna's unkind reference to McCain, while she associates Obama with heroic figures, illustrates a continuing problem for the Democrats: Obama's celebrity.
"I don't think that people in this country, people in our state make as a litmus test someone who can be better known than Madonna, someone who should be on the front page of People magazine more than George Clooney to be president," said Cantor, who is among those McCain's campaign has vetted as a possible running mate.

Jews say Madonna Insulted Holocaust Victims
Jerusalem (CNSNews.com) – Pop diva Madonna, who less than a year ago declared herself an “ambassador for Judaism,” has drawn on the Jewish people’s most painful memory to bash Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz).
Jewish groups said Madonna insulted Holocaust victims and all Americans with her comparison of McCain to former German dictator Adolf Hitler as part of her new world tour.
Madonna opened world concert tour over the weekend in Wales. While singing a song called “Get Stupid,” a photo montage showed images of destruction and global warming followed by video images of Hitler, Zimbabwe’s ruler Robert Mugabe and McCain, reports said.
“I find Madonna’s attempt to compare John McCain with Hitler beyond the pale and an insult to all Americans, Democrats as well as Republicans,”

Madonna...
The other bad choice. Is she speaking like a Brit these days, and/or has she decided what country she represents? She's a train wreck...what a joke!
Why?
Why does the democrat party rely so deeply on the thoughts of actors?
Maddona is a genius at getting publicity
She has done it again....
Who cares
Madonna is washed up, old and stale. Who cares what she thinks. Get off the stage Madonna, no one wants to see your old bod dancing so you resort to attention getting gimmicks.
This is where American culture implodes on itself
With so many important issues in our midst it is a nod to how our culture needs to just grow up if it wanted to look for a moment, be titillated and then get on with the task at hand. Madonna is an amazing spinster; she is speaking to a culture that watches TMZ far more then it does other broadcast shows that speak to serious issues. This time though, as a liberal democrat, I would ask her to keep the extremes in her pants as it were. I respect her for pushing certain issues but this one just creates a situation that is counter productive to the process at hands and for the future's sake she ought to make a statement of apology. Maybe she can point out more areas of concern that she is well aware of that makes this election so crucial
Let the Games Begin...
Too bad this is the backbone of our presidency. Its not whos the best man/woman for president. Its all about who can make the other person look bad enough at election time to either keep voters at home or scare voters in to voting for the other canidate. So to all you belivers out there in politics... I say let the games begin.
