Kaine coming to Beach to honor city as 'green destination'

Posted to: News Virginia Beach

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine will be in Virginia Beach on Friday at an event honoring the city as the state’s first green destination.

The event will be held at 2 p.m. at the convention center, 1000 19th St., according to a news release from Kaine’s office. Kaine will make remarks during the event.

The designation as first green destination comes from the Virginia Green Program, a partnership between the state Department of Environmental Quality, Virginia Tourism Corporation and Virginia Hospitality and Travel Association, according to the Virginia Green Web site, http://www.vatc.org/VirginiaGreen/index.asp

The program encourages and promotes pollution prevention techniques in tourism across the state, the site says.

VB IS GREEN!

Virginia Beach is Green with your TAX DOLLARS! Wait until the housing values drop in half, and the council's spending spree is cut short! I know you think I'm hating on the area I've lived in all my life, but I'm seriously seeing lots of young people looking to leave. This would be, "brain drain."

Congratulations to the VA Beach Green Hospitality Team

This Green effort, folks, is a Team of grassroots volunteers in the hospitality industry, a private ad hoc if you will, to support our local hospitality colleagues to join this green movement and together establish a “critical mass” of businesses, many locally owned and operated. Once this goal, was obtained we would be awarded a VA Green Destination certificate for our commitment to eco-friendly practices and to hopefully inspire others to join or maybe even you, reading this. Why? Not because Government imposed this - because, it is just the right thing to do, and we’d like to see our city move in this direction. That's it. There's no place for trivializing or demeaning these efforts. Congratulations are in order to these businesses who “stepped up” and for city efforts for recycling on the beach and the new hybrid buses. Support these certified Virginia Green businesses.

Maybe the governor is coming

Maybe the governor is coming dressed as a leprechaun with a box of lucky charms.

greenback city

The city for the tourist green back. All others have no place to park.

Well Spoken

Just like a true deveoper. Attack anyone that speaks out against paving over every last bit of dirt. If the VB council had not allowed complete and out of control over development of VB, but instead planned managed the community we would not have the mess we do now.

But keep building, sooner or later you will run out of dirt to concrete over.

aalto shows true color

Well thanks again for never missing the opportunity to express an uninformed opinion. At least you are consistent in the condemnation of developers. Since you condemn one and all, I guess you have decided to live in a tree house, in a forest, with no roads, utility systems ( I guess you just use the stream for all your needs), you farm the available open spaces for subsistence fruits and vegetables, and use a bow and arrow to hunt for your next meal, which you must consume raw since you are such an ardent environmentalist that you would never pollute the air with smoke. Knowing of course that none of the above applies, we must conclude that you simply want all the conveniences of modern life, yet once you have them, you would deny them to all who follow.

Green - Now that's funny.

Virginia Beach is green? Wow. Virginia Beach is he city that discourages effective mass transit and has zero ideas on alternative means of transportation. It took a state legislator to force them to get onboard with light rail. While this is exaggerated, it is almost like giving Exxon and award for being environmentally friendly to the Prince William Sound.

Agreed

Have to say I agree with the first 2 comments. Plainly stated.

What a joke. .

Virginia Beach is on a top ten list of the most bicycle unfriendly cities in the US, and on top of this Oceana's jets upon landing have been dumping millions of gallons of jet fuel all over the place. Save it Kaine for some one dumb enough to believe it. You want green, you have to go wayyyyyyy ou t west.

What makes VB Green?

Is it because the city designated itself Green without any form of justification. I guess the state is getting taken in by it. Too bad eventually the stuff will hit the fan, the city will be called on it and end up majorly embarrassing the people of the city.
If you want green, act like it. Promote green activities, not simply go after the green.

Green? HA!

Just wait. Once the developers remove the last tree and concrete over the last plot of grass, the only thing green will be city council's pockets.

Meanwhile, China builds

Meanwhile, China builds another smoke stack. The ChiComs are going to bury us because of AlGore.

I'm sure this will be an eyesore in 3 years when everyone finally realizes that Global Warming is a fraud.
