Kitten thrown from Chesapeake car is healing, enjoying fame

Posted to: Chesapeake News Pets

CHESAPEAKE

Perhaps the toughest thing for Trooper these days - worse than the pins in his femur and the clunky blue cast covering his right back leg - is being left alone.

Put him down and step away and the meowing starts, a squeaky sound that doesn't seem to cease until you lift him up again.

But he is rarely alone.

The hazel-eyed, barely 1-1/2- pound kitten was tossed from a moving car and onto a highway the last morning of July. Now, Trooper is the most famous feline at Mount Pleasant Veterinary Clinic, where he has lived since a motorist stopped to pick him up.

With fame have come cards from well-wishers and gift baskets packed with toys and so many monetary donations for his $2,000-plus surgery that the vet's office had to put a stop to them. PETA offered a $2,000 reward for information about the motorist. So far, that hasn't yielded any calls.

"We're all running around holding him when we get the chance," said Barbara Springer, a receptionist there. "I'm trying not to get attached because it'll break your heart when he leaves."

That could be a week or so, said Gabrielle Reed, a licensed veterinarian technician and Trooper's primary caregiver. He'll go home to Michele Laney of Moyock, N.C., the woman who stopped to save him.

In the meantime, Trooper is on a high-calorie, high-protein diet. He gets regular antibiotic injections. His back end is shaved. He's got scabs on his pink nose and under an eye. Stepping with the cast-covered leg is a bit of a struggle.

"He's really doing fabulously," said Reed, who had placed Trooper on a white towel, and then a scale, for a photo shoot Thursday.

He stretched his neck and started to squeak.

"Life is rough for the famous kitten," she said. "I know. Yes, I know. Come here."

Reed scooped him up. He curled against her dog-print scrubs. He was perfectly quiet.

What about the rest of litter....

I bet Trooper has brothers and sisters who weren't as lucky. He sure is a cutie pie!

I wonder...

Each time the Pilot publishes an animal welfare story, we see people who post comments to the tune of "we should care about people first!" I wonder if readers who make these comments donate their time and/or money to children, or homeless people, or war veterans, etc. I doubt that someone who actually volunteers or works with these kinds of (human) groups would disparage people who do the same for animals.

Kitten Mending story

The person or persons who threw that poor kitten out of the car should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Anyone who abuses an animal is a barbarian. One poster suggested that it might have been a child that did this. If that is the case, the child should be taught right now that animals are not to be abused. Furthermore, if this kitten WAS riding in a car with a child (or even an adult) it should have been in a carrier of some kind. I think this was a totally horrendous act by some sicko and I'm very glad to hear that Michelle rescued this poor baby. I thank the Pilot for running a human interest story like this.

Trooper

I can't wait for 5pm so I can go home and hug my cats. Glad to see Trooper is doing good and has a good home to go to. He's a real cutie and I can't imagine what someone could possibly have been thinking when they tossed him away. Somehow I have to believe that we all answer for our sins eventually.

Don't forget

Don't forget there are tons of other animals neglected and left with the shelters. Feel free to get them, and have them fixed so they don't have kids. Trooper is one of a million.

Trooper

Though it is crazy that someone would toss a cat from a moving vehicle, I find it a little pathetic at the amount of sympathy given to this kitten. Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for the cat and I am glad it's alive, however, the amount of donations received for this cat is a little ridiculous. Drive down any number of Hampton Roads streets and you will find numerous homeless people who can make better use of that kind of money. If one of those persons wound up in a hospital in need of an operation, how fast would you donate money to help him out? Or how about that poor cop that was killed in the line of duty last night, any of you donors going to help out his family? When one of our boys is killed over in Iraq, it barely makes the news over here. Let me see PETA make a donation to one of their families. Bottom line is we need to take better care of our fellow man first and foremost.

Trooper's rescuer

I want to give a big thanks to Michele for stopping and saving Trooper in the first place...without her, he wouldn't have made it to the vets (they are doing a great job, too)...she took the time to stop and pick him up before more harm came to him. She has the soul of an angel. Thanks, Michele.

Great!

Finally, some good news!

No excuse for cruelty

I know of at least two kittens who were thrown out of cars on the Brambleton St. bridge--I personally witnessed one of them myself. A friend and I were able to grab him as he teetered on the guard rail, just inches from falling into the water below. The other kitten was rescued by a friend. Both were miraculously uninjured, except for some scratches, but they could easily have been hit by cars and killed. I will never understand the mentality of a person who would do something like this. If you no longer want your animal, take him or her to the animal shelter. Don't throw them out of the car window like a cigarette butt.

FINDING THE ANIMAL THAT DID THIS TO TROOPER

Just wondering: With all of the cameras VDOT has along interstates, would it be possible for them to review video around the date and time of this horrific crime. If found, maybe it could possibly reveal the type of car or license plate information. Just a thought - I know many would like to see this heartless person prosecuted!
