Arts volunteers and philanthropists David and Susan Goode of Norfolk and the Hampton University Museum and Archives will be honored in September as recipients of the Governor's Awards for the Arts 2008.
The Goodes and the Hampton museum will be among the 10 recipients of the award, chosen from among 345 nominees, during a ceremony on Sept. 17 at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond.
"We're obviously very thrilled," said Vernon Courtney, director of the Hampton University Museum. "And I think it's very appropriate that this museum, having been here since 1868, gets recognized for the good work that's been done by those who came before me."
The Hampton museum is internationally known for its collections of African, African American and Native American art.
The Goodes have served on the boards and given generous donations to numerous arts organizations, including the Chrysler Museum of Art and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, both in Norfolk, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The couple also helped arts organizations in Roanoke. David Goode is the retired chairman and chief executive officer of Norfolk Southern Corp.
The other winners are: oldtime musician Ralph Stanley of Clintwood; the Richmond Jazz Society; Bob Brown Puppets of Arlington; the William King Regional Arts Center in Abingdon; "Shenandoah: The Washington and Lee University Review," a Lexington literary quarterly; Ralph Cohen and Jim Warren of Staunton, for their work on the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton; the Richmond Ballet and its artistic director, Stoner Winslett; and Richmond's Theatre IV and its founders, Bruce Miller and Phil Whiteway.
